The wash would be sending the beachgoers tumbling. Plus the plane is more in focus than objects an equal distance away.

wash from planes can be dangerous. They line up like that along the road frequently when the big planes come in.

Edited on Mon Nov-08-04 11:49 PM by Pithlet
that can make the distance between two objects, one close and one farther away, seem much shorter. That could be the case, if it isn't photoshopped. The people on the beach could be farther away, and not really right underneath the airplane.

It reminds me of the first time I came in for a landing at DC International. This was after that horrible crash in the bridge and icy water during a snow storm that a made-for-tv movie was done about. Anyway, sometimes you do not see the runway until the second before you land. Before that, it is the Potomac. I can remember inhaling to let out an "OMG WE'RE GOING TO DIEEEEEEEEEEEE!" scream as I saw the water get closer and closer. Then, runway and safe landing a split second later.

so you can see that the runway is just feet back from the storm rocks.

I don't think Saint Maarten even has an instrument landing system, so the pilot is doing it the old fashion way.

I've also seen pictures of people getting hit with jet blast in this same area when the jets are taking off.

16. Reminds me of I-95 in Fort Lauderdale
Before they redid 95 in the late 80s. It felt like the jets were literally within grasp! Before they put up wind deflectors, the jets would blow cars across the highway into each other!

My husband is a licensed aircraft mechanic, and he said there is absolutely no way this is real, and if it is, the plane is off course....no way it is an approved approach route. OK....the wizard has spoken. Nobody question him.
He is walking down the steps as I type talking about all of the reasons why this is so fake. :)
But a cool pic, nonetheless!

The right lens can make the effect look even more dramatic, but I do know that planes can come down very low over non-runway areas before they land. See my near death experience over DC further up thread :)

47. Actually I think is just motion blur
The photographer is following a moving object (the 747) which is traveling at what? 180mph? (not sure about the landing speed of a 747-400 is.)

The stationary objects (everything else) are slightly blurred because of camera motion.
