The state of music is in shambles. What craptacular song haunts your dreams? For me, its that crappy Goodies song by Cialis or something like that. God that song sucks ass.

3. I steadfastly refuse to listen to top-40 music from after 1987.
And 1987 is really pushing it because the downhill slide began in earnest in 1985, IMO. There is plenty of good music still being done, but corporate radio refuses to give it any airtime.

As for MTV, I gave up on that when they pulled "Amped" and "120 Minutes". The rest is nothing but bullshit.

6. Hilary Duff is the WORST THING EVER.
She's all in an arena like she's stinkin', Bon Jovi or something, then she starts whining whatever song she's released this week. It's infuriating. She actually has a song called "The Girl Can Rock."

Uh, no she can't.

Honorable mention to Gwen Stefani's song...
Like I want to sit and listen for four minutes about how she's a super hot female with a million dollar contract who everyone's waiting for.

It's a very busy song and a very disappointing first single.

16. I kind of like her.....
I expected something different I guess--even though I know she wanted it to be a "dance" record, more Blondie-ish.

But still. She's a super hot female with a million dollar contract?

I can't sing along with that without feeling like a huge loser LOL!

13. OMG, YES! The Stefani song BLOWS CHUNKS!
She's all posturing self-deprecation and all that, but it is just WAY too self-centered and coy. The "you're just a stupid ho" stuff is supposed to endear us and get us over the fact that she is singing into her belly button. I was rooting for her, but this was, as you say, very disappointing.

A similar mistake was made by Nelly Furtado. Her followup album led with a single about how magazines were trying to make her look too white in all the glamour shots they were taking of her. While that might be true, it's way too self-centered and vain to make a song like that your lead single on an album.

19. Same with Lindsay Lohan--another "singer" that sucks.
Her single is about how she wants the paparazzi to leave her alone.
I'm sure all the younguns who will buy her album have that problem.

Tip:
If you want to be not noticed, you don't go out and spend thousands on a music video, dummy.

When my kid is watching Lilo and Stitch, during the commercial we get treated to:

Hillary Duff
Raven Symone
Lindsay Lohan
Christy Carlson Romano-and she has the best voice of the lot although that song too, sucks. Googled her name because she really does seem to have the best voice and a slightly different style. As opposed to looking all sexy and singing about nonsense.

33. I can appreciate good music, there's just so little of it.
Of the new younger crop of folks, I must say Avril Lavigne and her manufactured fake punk/misery even though she's like 10 has grown on me slightly. Slightly. Also, I am not disgusted by...Vanessa Carlson is it, the one who does White Houses? I despise cutesy voices, but she reminds me of girls I knew in high school that were in band and choir.

I also adore Jason Mraz, but I wouldn't put him with the rest of that lot, probably because I like him. :)

Just for you, LOL.
I think it's no worse than any other of the stuff out there, and besides, I can relate to having had that sentiment at one time or another, as have many young ladies. Of course, it doesn't help that the chick who sings it is kind of scary.

No you can't call me later, and I don't want your number...whatever else she says......

20. "Living in the Shadows" is particularly horrific.
First, I thought she might NOT suck when the video started.
I thought she may be going down Joan Osborne way.

Then she TOTALLY clips every emotive word/phrase/moment in the song, does scripted ad-libbing....and then I hear lyrics about how her life is good and she has more than she should?

What?

That passes for songwriting now? Rhyming good and should? In a song called Living in the Shadows?

Ohhhhhh make it stop.

not a flicker of romanticism to be found. just a lot of unmitigated angst and raunch and petty individualism and whathaveyou.

also what's the deal with airline peanuts.

23. Any whiney emo-ballad or whatever they're called.
Until recently I didn't know that the song that begins "I'm not a perfect persaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan" and the other one that moans "I'm saaarry I'm not perfeeeeeeeect" were by two different bands. (Hoobastank and...Sum 41?)

I remember back in the day thinking about how Green Day co-opted "punk" to make a buck, but bands like Good Charlotte and their ilk...shiiiiiiiiit.

They ARE Hoobastank, that's for sure.

It's so horrible--and I had the misfortune of seeing them "perform" it on MTV, and he sung it quite badly.

34. "Alternative" music has become just as homogenized as the rest of America
It's amazing... all of the news channels run the same news, all of the network channels run the same reality shows/sitcoms, all of the music sounds the same.

And now we're almost at the point where all of the politicians are saying the same thing (if the Democratic Party moves any further to the right).

I'm looking forward to getting my iPod and this gadget.

I'll never have to listen to crappy FM radio stations again... except for when the Q101 (Chicago's alternative station) runs their indie shows.
