Anyone hear the Alice Coltrane bit on NPR this morning?
She was interviewed along with her son Ravi on Morning Edition. Her new album sound excellent. A lot easier that her older stuff. And it's her first new album in a long time.

1. I did -- it sounded great. And Robbie is so well-spoken. >
John's busting with pride somewhere.

2. Actually it's Ravi
Not to be a jerk or anything. It's the Hindi name for sun I believe.

Am I on DU too much? :D

Very nice story - but Alice's music is still a bit too avant-garde for my taste. Great to have her back, though.

5. I have one of her albums from the early 70s
It's pretty out there. But I think I could listen to this one. And I thought of Chavez as well.

6. It's Pretty Out There?!?!?
And that's a bad thing, how? Her and John (after Monk and Cecil Taylor) changed my understanding of what music was.

For me, there is nothing too avant-garde. I WANT to be forced to pay attention.

8. No Offense Intended
I guess that was my way of saying the same thing as your reply to me. I would guess there is no music too out there for me. Part of my intrinsic weirdness.

9. No offense taken.
I used to enjoy some of the more avant stuff. But maybe I'm just mellowing in my old age. These days I like my jazz to have great melodies and it's gotta swing.

11. I'm with you...the outter, the better.....
I listened to Alice's CD this past weekend, but I didn't have the opportunity to really listen to it...too much going on around me. I have to give it a serious listen. I liked what I heard, but it is much more accessible than her earlier work, as has been said. A friend of mine, a percussionist, played with her for years. He has a story or three. ;)

Recently I found a copy of the CD reissue of Sonny Sharrock's "Black Woman" in a used record store. Man, oh man... Blew my mind.
