The "Oy-Oy-Oy Show." Love it or hate it (or neutral)?
I love it. Al Franken and Katherine Lanpher have grown into the whole "The Al Franken Show" so totally that I am amazed. I listened on-line during the first few weeks of the "O'Franken Factor," when AAR first cranked up, and I was soooo embarrassed for them. I knew then that it was purely growing pains and learning curve. I was afraid, with the MainStreamMedia's reports of financial ruin at AAR, that Al and Katherine would not have the time to hone their wit. But, true stars that they are, they pulled it out.

I had a drama teacher once who said "all true art is seemingly effortless." Today, Al and Katherine bantered about "Oy,Oy,Oy" coming up. It was so laid back. Then "Oy,Oy,Oy" comes up, and it is so well rehearsed that it comes across as being Al's perfectly natural reaction (as a Jew) to bad news. Oy!.

I now have Sirius radio. I listen all day. The bad thing is the constant plugging of SIRIUS!. My old dog's name is Sirius (Greek for Dogstar) and he thinks all day that the radio is talking to him. Young dog's name is Nick-Nick (from Canicula, the Latin name for Dogstar).

1. You realize only Al can do this.
If I (a non-Jew) were to try it, I'd never hear the end of it.

9. Oh yes, I know.
But Al has put me more at ease with some of my friends, who happen to be Jewish. I happen to be Waspish (in heritage only). The W.A.S. part I am stuck with. It is the "P" that bothers me.

4. I think it's funny ... Al goofing around acting like a crotchety..
old guy.

The spot I haven't been listening to, for the last couple of months is the Mark Luther Dittohead spot. I don't find it funny or enlightening.

3. I'm liking it better every time I hear it
Sometimes it's pretty lame, but I think it's endearing. I've known a few Jewish couples who remind me of Al and "Miriam" and it brings back fond memories of some very sweet people.

15. Well, they had great sex last night.
Al took Miriam to dinner and fed her a glass of Chabliss. Al popped a "Viagra" during dinner. Miriam's glass of wine was enhanced by some medications she was on due to depression from the GOP mandate. So, instead of the movie they were planning to watch, Al took Miriam home and, well, you know ...

6. Hate it. Agony. Very outdated borscht-belt humor.
Franken is even outdated for his age. I'm surprised he doesn't use rimshots. Actually, that would be an improvement.

BTW, it's obsolete because even in NY, the number of people still alive who speak that way is dwindling. Modern "Jewish" humor has to be more subtle as the cultural cues have become more subtle. Jon Stewart does it pretty well.

Sorry to disagree. I really like Al the guy, but as a comedian, he's not my fave. Hell, even Mel Brooks lost all relevance and became unfunny after he "jumped the shark" with Spaceballs.

7. Feh. It's getting old already.
So is Al's dittohead friend Mark Luther. Time for a new schtick.

11. I love "Oy, Oy, Oy"
I hate dittohead friend Mark Luther. Get the hook. Quick.

However, I do like Al Franken's general blend of truth with, as you say, schtick. It sure beats O'Reilley's blend of lies with, as they say, shit!

13. That was the first time I heard "Oy, Oy, Oy."
I actually thought that he had been a car wreck in Cleveland, getting out the Jew vote as it were. Shaker Heights? Well, he was stoooopid! He cut across all those lanes on the interstate, driving like an old person in West Palm. Poor Al. At least he had the guts to report from the hospital. Poor Katherine handled it well. Oy.
