Saw the Pixies last night -- they're even better 15 years later
I caught the Pixies last night in St. Paul, MN, and I have to say that they sounded even better than they did when I last saw them in 1989, on the Doolittle tour!

They were more together, less tense, and actually seemed to enjoy each other's company! Believe it or not, I think I even saw Frank and Kim smile at each other! The set was weighted heavily toward "Surfer Rosa" and "Doolittle" (their first two albums), which they played with as much passion as they did when they were in their mid-20s.

The only differences I noticed: a better light show, a big fog machine, Kim's hair is shorter, the other guys are bald, and the venue was ten times bigger. :)

If you're a 80s alt-rock fan (before it became low-grade heavy metal), GO SEE THESE GUYS! Given their personalities, they may not tour again...

2. I'm jealous
the shows here in Boston sold out immediately. I saw them a bunch in the '80s.

4. Sounds like Minneapolis in the 80s
Even if you were underage, you could still see Soul Asylum every Sunday night at First Avenue/7th Street Entry (that club in "Purple Rain"). Or, you could get a fake ID and see Hüsker Dü or the Replacements at the 400 Bar.

Damn, we were spoiled back then. :)

6. I saw them Monday night!

They started with "Debaser' which is my fave.
i had the 'all overs' and a big grin on my face the rest of the night.

I agree - they really did seem like they were having a good time for the most part. Frank even put his hand affectionately on Kim's beck at one point.
The level of professionalism from Kim surprised me, too. Having seen her recently-ish with The Breeders- who were a bit...shambolic...!

The several-minute noise solo courtesy of Joey Santiago towards the end was great as well.

The band seemed pleased and a bit surprised at the warm reception.

And i don't know when I have seen an audience leave so happy. Not the "man the cellphones!" one tends to see as soon as something is over.

All in all just the antidote for how pissed off I (like so many of us) have been.

Yay Pixies! Thanks for the visit.
