You should watch who you cast aspersions at. I wrote some of the Internet you're using.

It's easy to block a message-board index from being placed on search engines.

I think that would be a good idea. Only members can search for posts on DU itself.

Anything that is put on the internet is "public." Why would you expect any privacy for your online posting?

Seriously this is nothing new a few years ago I did a yahoo search of my username and turned up a few links of stuff that I had posted on other boards and even an website I ran for a while.

You could also do a search on your real name and see what turns up too.

was from a newspaper interview I did. Was no big deal. I could try a yahoo and other search engines to see what's out there for the other boards, using my other monikers. Although, my other monikers on google didn't come up. Now ya got me going again.. Yikes LOL

Some of the other boards I've been in are medical related. So you might be right; perhaps those things ARE TOO personal for the public to be looking at. :shrug:

I have googled my DU handle and come up with many of my posts, but I have also googled my real name and come up with nothing. So as long as that is the case, I'm okay with it.

The fact is, I am a programmer who has written search engines. Duh, obviously they index things. Obviously you can search for your name on the Internet. If you go search for mine, you get stuff about programming and what-not.

As Sugarbluez points out, it is unusual for message boards to allow a search engine to crawl it. It is easy to block Google, Yahoo, all the search engines use one way to do it; because they all cooperate.

So, the fact that our posts are being indexed is an aspect of the DU configuration.

When I got an account here, I assumed that, because on-board search is a paid feature, the site itself was not indexable. This gave me an impression of community, and so my posts, while not private posts, are posts within the context of a community that is not the Internet as a whole.

Furthermore, people who paid DU so they could access search ought to feel a little irritated/disincentivized.

Anyway, spare me your 'common sense.' My day job involves computer security.

It took you, a programmer who has written search engine, almost THREE MONTHS to figure this out?

Oh... one more thing Mr. IQ, I "paid" DU to support a community of like-minded patriotic citizens. Not to use the search function.
