I was just watching "Catch me if you can"
Was it really that big a deal to be an airline pilot in the 60s? All these kids where asking the pilots for autographs and shit.

1. Because airline pilots were usually known as
very revolutionary people because they were taking a job many people were afraid to take.

2. Yes,they were the rock stars of that period.
Air travel was still glamorous, real sterling flatware and china place settings. Free drinks!!! Roomy seats. It was the exact opposite of what it has become.

And it was exotic, traveling to faraway places was something that just wasn't routine in the '60s.

3. One of my earliest and still enduring memory..
..is being allowed to visit an airplanes cockpit in 1958, when I was five years old and flying for the first time. The pilots were rock stars to me. I still have the plastic wings they gave me. And, no, none asked me about gladiators.
