Here's a thought...Why Private Ryan is not being shown
Now I never seen the movie myself. I can't handle all that stuff... A friend of mine told me that it was bloody and basically true to life.

Maybe someone realized that if people saw that movie they might say. You know if that happened in WWII It has to be happening in Iraq now... It will get people turned off on what BushCo wants the US people to be "cheerleaders" for. If your cheerleaders aren't saying Go Troops Then how many Troop will be saying YEAH LET'S DO IT!!!

1. if there's one thing we know

we wouldn't want to worry a certain Quaker's little mind about the affects of war on its participants. That would be far too worrisome.

2. I have another theory
If the FCC had to fine a "patriotic movie" they would be scorned badly by the right wing....but if it violated the standards they've already used against Howard Stern and they DIDN'T fine them......well that would be discrimination of some kind wouldn't it.

4. I heard on Ed Schultz today that
The Sinclair stations are among those not showing it.

And Randi Rhodes was wondering what they would show instead, maybe reruns of Gomer Pyle and McHale's Navy?

16. Actually

at least some of these stations are choosing to honor those who have sacrificed for their country with a musical program and Return To Mayberry.

6. Heads-A-Poppin'
It is very (and unflinchingly) violent; soldiers are cut down both en masse and individually, when they/we least expect it. (The "helmet" scene is a perfect example.)

...which is WAY too true-to-life for the Bush Regime. They'd like something more along the lines of "The Green Berets," John Wayne's laughable Vietnam flick--but preferably something with no American deaths at all, or at least nothing but "clean kills" with no disturbing images of screaming wounded. Bad for recruitment, you know.

11. yep
another one I think they should show is Red Dawn. On the surface, it is a right-wing propaganda piece by John Milius - but NOW it can be used as a lesson about occupation. The lesson is that you can't win an unwelcome occupation.

From what I hear people in the service really like the movie Red Dawn. I wonder if the deep ironies are lost on them, I suspect they are not.

9. Interesting point but I think you're wrong
Here's why: Janet Jackson.

Ever since her wardrobe mishap at the Super Bowl, right wing christian hate groups like Focus on the Family have been putting constant pressure on the FCC to increase "decency standards" on the public airwaves.

In kind, the FCC has been leveling fines right and left to networks and affiliates. This goes for both TV and radio. The end resut is a lot of skittishness on the part of networks and affiliates, and thus, no one is taking any chances. I take the stations at their word. My local ABC affiliate issued a statement on their website about requesting to air it after 10:30 p.m. and the request was declined by ABC. The station specifically said it was a fear of FCC fines that lead them to their decision. They went on to laud the film.

14. christian groups only consider
decency standards when it comes to anything even remotely sexual. (Anybody else remember the flap about the Sesame Street puppets Bert and Ernie promoting the 'gay' lifestyle?)

But if it's violent...the bloodier the better...they've got no objection.

15. I would agree on the bloodier the better part
There's no doubt they have an insatiable blood lust. But I disagree on the overall larger point. Their pressure over Janet Jackson's tit is what led to the fines which is what led to stations deciding to pre-empt the broadcast for fear of getting levied with a huge FCC fine. I personally don't think the FCC would fine over this movie, especially considering a precedent was set years ago with the broadcast of Schindler's List. No fines were issued then and the film was aired un cut and it could be argued that movie is every bit as violent as Saving Private Ryan.

10. The movie does show the horrors of war...
Including a scene where they shot surrendering German soldiers.

13. that was my feeling too. Ed Shultz is a putz, by the way
he was trying to say "oh...Spielberg's making a good amount on this"

I'm tired of his attitude.
