Speaking of war movies, who liked "Platoon"?
It had rightwing and leftwing soldiers. It had the ring of truth to it too.

"I think now, looking back, we did not fight the enemy, we fought ourselves. The enemy was in us. The war is over for me now, but it will always be there, the rest of my days. As I'm sure Elias will be, fighting with Barnes for what Rhah called "possession of my soul." There are times since, I've felt like a child, born of those two fathers. But be that as it may, those of us who did make it have an obligation to build again. To teach to others what we know, and to try with what's left of our lives to find a goodness and a meaning to this life."

15. What a ridiculous statement: I suppose Schindler's list glorified

the holocaust?

Realistic depiction of war is desperately needed. Sadly, I saw the real thing (Vietnam) on the nightly news as a child, cementing my anti-war stance-- but in today's sanitized "news," too many of our youth looks upon war and violence like some kind of video game. Realistic depiction in film is our only hope of conveying that message. Movies like Private Ryan, Platoon, the mini series Band of Brothers (my own personal favorite), and others do that. There is a world of difference in these films and the glorified depictions of decades past--the John Wayne genre.

I'll let my sigline speak for me:
"Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
-George Santayana

9. There is nothing necessarily wrong with a war film.
Edited on Thu Nov-11-04 09:52 PM by illini
Some war films do go over the top. Chuck Norris films come to mind. But many show the darker sides "Platoon" is one. And, some films show both sides "Band of Brothers". What about a documentary about war? Do people who watch and like war doc films piss you off also. "All quiet on the Western Front" (black and white) is one the best films ever made. I does anything but glorify warfare. I suggest you watch it or read the book about war. Or do you hate people who like books about war. Think before you type!!!!!!!!!!!!!

12. It wasn't a film you love, exactly.
I found that movie deeply disturbing.

I felt it opened a lot of wounds from Viet Nam, but at the same time it was cathartic for many who lived it.

I hated what that film showed me, but I also felt it was an extremely good film that deserved the awards it won. It did exactly what the director set out to do, and it left me changed by seeing it.

Not many films fall in that category. you don't love them, exactly, you respect them.

13. I saw it the day before I left for boot camp in 1987
Probably not the best movie choice at that particular time but I thought it was pretty good. Not quite as excellent as Apocolypse Now or Full Metal Jacket.

14. Well, I loved it- it is among my top 7 or so favorite movies of all time
From the opening

Rejoice O Young Man In Thy Youth

-Ecclesiastes

to the final moments

It is exquisite and painful and personal- just so moving.
