35. I've heard Missoula is very liberal
and I'm actually getting very interested in the politics of Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. I've read that the people in those states are socialists but also live by guns, God, and gays. A populist candidate can override the triple G's in many cases. Senator Dorgan for example. Is that how your new governor won? Could you tell me a little abou the politics of Missoula and Montana?

60. Hi Tweedtheatre
Missoula is very liberal especially in comparison to many of the towns and rural areas in the State. It's a college town.

Montana as a whole has a very progressive history coming out of the age of the copper barons who had a strangle hold on politics. The eventual labor movement backlash led to a very liberal electorate.

The population changes in the last 20 years has changed this. We have seen in influx of conservative voters "escaping" to MT from all over the country. The East is sparse and losing population and the West is growing fast.

I live in Western MT and the differences between here and the eastern part of the state is dramatic. I think MT as a whole is more comparable to WA and OR than to SD or ND. The West tends to be much more liberal and the East much more conservative, and the historical economic mainstays are extractive industry such as mining and timber, and Ag. Tourism is now very big and growing.

Eastern MT is much like the Dakotas.

The 2004 state elections went like they did for a few reasons.

Our last Repub Governor, Judy Martz made a lot of ethically questionable decisions and scandals and her approval ratings were in the high twenties (she didn't run this time)and the Democratic candidate (Schwiezter) ran with a moderate Republican for Lieutenant Governor.

The economy is a basket case after 16 years of purely Republican rule. They rammed through energy deregulation which has been a disaster, just one of many blunders.

As for taking back the state senate and the big gains in the legislature, MT does redistricting every 10 years and it's traded back and forth between the Repubs and the Demos. In 2002 it was the Demos turn and this is the first election with the new districts.

MT has one of the countries most progressive constitutions, it was redone in the seventies. Among other good things, we have an explicit right to privacy and an explicit right to clean air and water. As a whole I would say that guns trump both God and gays.

Hope that gives you a little insight.

20. I selected my adopted state of California
not my birthstate of Oklahoma (we were there all of a month, maybe less)

and not my state of heritage (not sure what you call it....it's where my parents and three generations before them are all from) - Montana

The longest I've ever been in one place is four years (4 yrs in San Diego, 4 yrs in San Jose and now 4 yrs in LA). California is the state I've spent the most number of years in (culmulativly, that is). It's home to me.
