DU Gamers - Question
I know I've been asking a lot of advice lately on different threads...

(looks like I still am, just mentioning that to acknowledge and thank everyone) :dunce:

Anyway, I wanted to know if anyone could recommend some good games that will run on my PC. I can't play the newest generation of games right now, because I just don't have the video card for it..

But I have a HP Pavilion 1.5ghz, with 256megs of ram and a 32meg NVidia TNT2 RIVA video card...

I guess the good games for my machine would be ones that came out in or around like 2002 or so, or when this computer was the freshest jIZZam.

Any recommendations for this generation of games that will run well on my machine? Any style of game is cool, FPS, Adventure, Sim, I'll play em all.

:toast: thanks ya'll

Heyo

2. Half Life....
.. right on.. I'm on it like white on rice... heard good things about it.

There is a half life 2 now right? Ah but you probably need the big daddy pimp juice 128meg video card to play it.

But hey, I am sure the first one rules ass. Heard many good things about it.. and some girlfriends who lost their boyfriends to it... :dunce:

5. 128MB is middle-of-the-road for video cards now...
Edited on Thu Nov-11-04 11:39 PM by Spider Jerusalem
I have a 128MB Radeon 9500 Pro...thinking about swapping it for one of the new 256MB cards...

And I second the recommendation of Half-Life. You should check out the free mods Day of Defeat, COunterstrike, and Firearms, too. (multiplayer, so you'll need broadband).

8. you're probably going to need a 256 or higher video card to play it.
half life one will be plenty good for you and keep you occupied for a long long time, trust me :-)

15. Did you do dungeon siege as well? I loved the first one. The expansion
was too easy, I thought.

4. Here's a few...
Medal of Honour Allied Assault (might tax the video card a little, but it should run fine at 800*600 with medium details)

Max Payne (not Max Payne 2)

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin

Black & White

Starcraft

6. You could upgrade to a 64mb card for like 10 bucks and
it would double the amount of games you could play.

Hell, for 40 bucks you could get a 128mb card and that would quadruple the number of games - even a cheap one.

...next paycheck might make that happen, since rent is paid this month already...

7. Bump up your memory
It's cheap and pretty easy. You can also consider spending $200 on a new video card. That would probably go a long way.

10. The Longest Journey
BEST adventure game ever. Beautiful artwork, compelling characters (including a female protagonist who's actually not a sex object), and a deep and touching story. If you're into RPGs, the Infinity Engine games (Baldur's Gate 1&2, Icewind Dale 1&2, Planescape: Torment) should run fine on your computer, and they're all exceptional, especially Torment.

13. If you don't upgrade any, Starcraft is good

Of course KOTOR was incredible, so that gets my vote, too.

16. Geez, your machine is a Camero compared to my Pinto...
Anyway, some of my favorites that should run fine, in no particular order:

System Shock 2
Midieval: Total War
Alpha Centauri
Serious Sam
Baldur's Gate 2
Fallout 2
Deus Ex (might be choppy on your card, but try it)
Star Trek: Elite Force
Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic (cutscenes will be choppy)
GTA3 Series
Freespace 2
Mechwarrior 4 (or 2 if you have 98/ME)
Planescape: Torment

...just to hear sexy, sexy Shodan and Delacroix whispering to me.

I mean, because of the gameplay.

20. My game of choice
BattleZone Capture-The-Flag. Hosted at:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/bzflag/

A first-person tank simulator. Real-time connection with people all over the world. Benefits:

1. VERY small game size (4 MB installer)

2. efficient code (less problem than other games)

3. Worldwide community involved (many HATE bush)

4. Open source software (also complete freeware)

Drawbacks:

The graphics engine is a bit primitive, but it improves with each release. It looks like something out of the mid to late nineties. Overall, its my favorite game of all time. Check it out.

28. O my
I compleatly forgot about FreeSpace
yes go get 1 and 2 now and a flight stick
They are some of the best space flight games i have played + the story line is beyond cool ( kind of like space above and beyond if you remember that series but diffrent.) but yea awsome game to bad I think they sold the rights to the series or just didnt pick them up and now we shall never really know how it ends sort of.
Never got to play Freelancer but I hear that is good as well.

26. Can't believe no one's mentioned Deus Ex
It's sort of like Half Life, but better. It's a first-person shooter that also gives you the ability to complete the missions without even firing a shot--just through using stealth and brains. The game is intelligent, has an intriguing conspiracy-theory storyline, and is different every time you play it. You will be playing it for years.

Oh, and I have almost the same specs on my machine as yours, and it runs perfectly.

You will have to pick it up on e-Bay, Amazon, or find it at a used software store like Software Boutique (where I got my copy for $10). Amazingly, this gem has been out of print for a year or two.
