3. no text - no further text, so don't bother clicking the link
to see anything else, unless you want to see if we're lying, or see the purty pictures that we put in our signature lines :)

13. Go to Options >> Edit your profile
You'll see an entry for Avatar Image

You have two choices, select a ready made one by clicking on the following images link, or designing (or copying from somewhere else) your own avatar. Basically, any graphic that you can reduce to 48x48 pixels and <= 3KBytes - in either JPEG or GIF format, and then upload it with the upload and follow the instructions.

9. Now that it's stupid question time...
Why do some of you folks use * instead of Bush? It seems kind of arbitrary; some of you use it, some of you don't.

12. not stupid at all... first off, I hate seeing his name, typing his
name or saying his name...

so * stood for his first term, for he will alsways be in books as *, the first un-elected president.

now that he has stolen 2004, and by all apearances gotten away with it, he has been promoted to ** for me.

also, it keeps it clear we are not refering to Bush41 that way.

15. "Hate seeing his name" sounds perfectly apt to me.
I thought it might be an FBI/CIA hacker/surveilance thing. ** it is then. Cheers.

14. A "newby"? At 1000+ posts?
At 80 posts, I guess I'm still in the immaculate conception/petri dish stage of my DU life. Why do M.B.I.?

17. WTF is one of my faves...
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 04:25 AM by fleabert
Here are a few more that stumped me when I first started on forums:

BTW- by the way
IMO- in my opinion
ROTFLMAO- rolling on the floor laughing my ass off
STFU- shut the fuck up

there are so many more (see the dictionary link above), but I felt it necessary to redeem my stupidity with some knowledge!

edit: I am also wondering how 1000+ qualifies as a newbie! does that mean it takes more than 2000 to lose the title?!?!? WTF!

:silly:

19. not sure if it is used differently here, but
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 05:36 AM by fleabert
I wasnt' sure if I knew what the def. was, so I googled it and found this link that was pretty good. It closely matches what I thought it meant. I understood it to apply to propaganda specifically, but I guess it applies to all information.

http://maxwell.lucifer.com/virus/alt.memetics/what.is.html

Meme (pron. meem): A contagious information pattern that replicates by parasitically infecting human minds and altering their behavior, causing them to propagate the pattern. (Term coined by Dawkins, by analogy with "gene".) Individual slogans, catch-phrases, melodies, icons, inventions, and fashions are typical memes. An idea or information pattern is not a meme until it causes someone to replicate it, to repeat it to someone else. All transmitted knowledge is memetic.
