Election Malaise
I feel like there's been a death in the family. I have had trouble sleeping and focusing. I thought I would start feeling better this week but I have been walking around in a haze or angry or on the verge of tears.

I am very detached normally-very rational and not particlularly emotional. Will this pass? Should I see a shrink? Go on anti-depressants?

This really isn't like me....

2. If it is unusual for you, there is probably no need to see a shrink
It's common and perfectly normal for people to feel depressed and out of sorts when dealing with a loss - and this is a major, major loss for millions of us.

If you don't suffer from chronic depression, this will pass. Help your mood improve by trying to get back on a healthy schedule. Try to sleep and eat on a regular schedule, get as much exercise as possible, and get outside and see people. Don't isolate yourself at home.

If, on the other hand, this is a peak in a long-time malaise, then do see a psychiatrist. Chronic depression is nothing to fool around with - I know.

3. Yah, me too. It doesn't seem to be getting any better.
All these wild DU folks and their wonderful, mad liberalism helps but it has been pretty tough.

Hang in there.

As for the anti-depressants, I tried the natural suppliment route first. I hate those Big-Pharma scumbags almost as much as Bush & Co.

Cheers

4. In my opinion
you are not just in mourning for this election. You are in mourning for this country. This was not an ordinary election but a decisive one in American history, where its loss signifies the death of the America that we thought we knew.

I first went through these feelings at the time of the Iraq invasion. This was also when I began reading DU and alot of things hit me all at once about the true nature of what was happening in this country.

I would say that I went into the same kind of state that you are in now. I already have issues with chronic depression, so I was thrown into a really severe state and am only just now pulling myself back from the brink.

I guess I kind of got through my mourning period then. A part of me I think, realized that there was no way they were going to allow us to win the election, so in some ways I'm doing a better job than I might have been just from going through the process earlier.

I don't really know what to suggest. Nothing that you do is going to make the daily outrages go away, or stop the creeping fascism. It's reaching a point of acceptance in yourself that you can only do what you can do, and some things are out of your control.

You may want to try to find other things to focus on for awhile.

If you don't already have depressive tendencies, you will probably snap out of it alot quicker than I have, but there is a pain in the loss of your country that will never go away.

We do have to fight to try to take our country back.

Sorry for the excessively long answer.
