The Shein family's trip to New York from Florida got off to a rocky start when 2-year-old Isidore's finger was severed in a luggage carousel at Kennedy Airport Thursday afternoon.
The boy's parents, Andrew and Tien Shein of Tampa, were waiting for their bags after getting off a JetBlue flight at about noon when Isidore stepped onto the conveyor belt and somehow got his finger caught in a mechanism.
Fellow passengers were able to find the severed piece of Isidore's right middle finger, Andrew Shein said. Paramedics packed it in ice and Port Authority and Nassau police rushed the family and the finger to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow.
Doctors were able to re-attach it after several hours of surgery and Isidore was resting well Thursday, expected to make a full recovery, Dr. Richard Bagdonas, vice chairman of the emergency department, said.
Because of the painstaking work in finding the severed part and the efficiency of getting it to the hospital, surgeons were able to save Isidore's finger, Bagdonas said.
Emergency workers "handled the tissue delicately to preserve the vessels remaining on the stump he had," Bagdonas said. "Normally, this is very difficult."
Hand surgeon Dr. Michael Stracher performed the re-attachment.
