I think I have a problem
with a game that allows you to pick up a hooker and then kick her out of your car and kill her with a chain saw!

A coworker was just telling me about Grand Theft Auto.

Is it just me??? Does anyone else see this as a bad thing?

I'm not trying to start a flame war, just wondering.

(Yes, I know it's just a game!)

1. That's the reason I won't let my 13-year-old son have it.
A lot of his friends do.

Adults can make their own choices, but can you imagine the parent that lets a 13-year-old have this???

2. I don't want to start a flame war, either, but ...
I've always had a problem with that game. And I like games, in general! Totally just my personal opinion, but I think that game really goes a little too far. Not trying to stop anybody from playing it, it's just that I won't be slapping it into my Gamecube any time soon.

5. That game is disgusting.
Don't you love the hypocrisy, though...fundies who elected a president who will ruin them financially just so they could prevent those nasty homosexshuls from getting married...will buy this game for their kids. Moral values, indeed... :eyes:

6. I think it a little strange
that anyone would want to play at killing someone with a chainsaw.

7. Grand theft auto
Motely36, although I understand your reservations about a game that allows you to pick up a hooker and then kick her out and kill her with a chain saw. I have played the game, it is a very brutal game. You can also get on top of the roof of a building and use a snipper riffle to kill pedestrians walking down the street. One thing we have to keep in mind, it is just a game. I believe it should not be a game that children should play. I know I wont let my son play the game. I guess you could say I am mixed on this subject, I find nothing wrong with an adult playing, just no kids!

9. I respect your opinion
It just seems that these games are being marketed to kids even though the labels say mature only. I just think we live in a society that makes violence fun.

Don't get me wrong, I watch lots of violent films and I know the majority of people are not going to go out and kill a hooker because of this game. But, it just worries me.

Oh, by the way Welcome to DU!

:hi:

8. It is fantasy.
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 10:49 AM by Beware the Beast Man
The characters are not flesh and blood, they are dots and pixels. The game clearly has an "M" rating. I would rather someone take out their frustrations on a computer game than open fire on their school or office.
And FYI, killing hookers was never a requirement to succeed in the game.

further edit- on San Andreas, the newest installment of GTA, they have made strident efforts to "PC" the game. The lead character's gang is fiercely anti-drug, and the armed robbery and rampage missions are now gone. If anything, it's more or less a game about vigilantism.

14. Oh, not at all, I see your point.
It's definitely not a game for children. Heck, it's not a game for some adults, either!

13. The Sims, another one popular with teens, allows you to...
drown them, set them on fire, and starve them to death. For no reason.

Maybe I'm just old and overreacting. But it's disturbing to watch.

15. It also lets you fall in love, start families, go on vacation, adopt pets,
Learn magic tricks, throw parties, argue with housemates, and do gardening. There are more pluses than minuses. But, since it's a life simulator, Sims can die as well.
