90 Year Old Loses Control Of Car - Crashes Into Store

A 90-year-old man lost control of his car on Thursday morning and plowed into a Rite Aid pharmacy on Route 1 in Scarborough, police said. No was injured, but damage to the store was estimated at more than $20,000.

Philip Dubay of Scarborough was trying to pull into a handicapped-parking spot near the entrance to the Rite Aid around 8:30 a.m. when he hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, Officer Allen Wilson said.

Dubay's 1977 Oldsmobile station wagon jumped over the sidewalk and struck a wall of the building right behind the cash register, Wilson said. The wall was lined with bottles of liquor, many of which broke, Wilson said.

Dubay was unhurt, Wilson said. A store employee was behind the counter but away from the cash register at the time of the crash and was not injured.

The store had to be closed because of concerns about whether an awning over the entrance would collapse from structural damage, Wilson said.

Dubay's car sustained $1,500 worth of damage. The total cost for damage to the store and the liquor was still being calculated, but Wilson said, "I can say it would be in excess of $20,000."
