Moral values my ass! Have you seen the 25 Million Dollar Hoax?
What the hell is wrong with this society? Have you seen the premise for this show? The premise is, this woman has to pretend that she's won 25 million dollars and then she has to spend it extravagently without giving a penny to her family. The whole thing is about her lying to her family and alienating them.

What the fuck?? This is the family values they're so worried about protecting? 50% of marriages end in divorce, child abuse and molestation are on the rise, as is domestic abuse, and now millions of people are tuning in in prime time to watch a woman deceive her family, and her family be hurt and confused as a result. And they're worried about a couple of gay guys wanting to be able to shut off life support for each other when they're terminally ill?

Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with people? AAARRGH!!!

1. To be fair, this is playing into the hands of conservatives.
They have done a great job of painting Hollywood (and TV) as liberal and largely Democrat. They get to blame this shit on us.

5. FOX Entertainment is among the worst of this genre.
I think they are changing the values of this country towards a Republican viewpoint (screw your neighbor, demean yourself for $) by pumping this kind of entertainment with the subliminal message that is tailored to the values we see Republican's pushing in Congress.

6. But some of the most morally devalued programs are on Fox, their God
station.

Fox pushes this crap because it makes them money.

8. Yep. And they still manage to blame it on erosion of family values,
which they place solely on the fault of liberals. The GOP and Fox never show obvious, concrete ties, so the idiot sheeple will believe the Fundies when they blame the liberals. A great ruse.

2. See my "nutpunch" thread.
So far the 00's have been the absolute worst decade for pop culture. It's just dandy that we have a slew of shows on TV that reward people for backstabbing, lying, and genuinely acting like assholes just to get some spare paper.

4. Please take my advice...
get rid of your TV, or at least your cable if you haven't already.

I did, and I like having more money, AND I LOVE NOT SEEING MINDLESS POP-CULTURE BULLSHIT NONSTOP!!!!

7. The crazy thing is,
There's still a number of programs I can't live without. Daily Show, Chappelle's Show, CSI, Pimp My Ride, to name a few.

9. I don't have cable.
I live in the city and I get 16 channels out of the air. 2 are Spanish language and two are fundie channels, so that leaves 12, which seems like plenty to me. I have 2 PBS stations, which is nice.

11. I'm working on that!
I ditched all the premium channels on Tuesday, and I'm trying to watch less TV overall. The next step will be to cut back to the $5-a-month basic cable.

It's easier than I thought it would be, and I'm saving a lot of money.

13. It's nice when you stop...
You start realizing how much more time you have, and start really seeing how much people worry/obsess/talk about it. To me, I'm happy to not spend my time/energy/brainpower on that. But it's an individual thing, of course. I just found that our family is happier and closer without TV around to absorb us!

3. I'm watching the "news" on MSNBC report last night's "You're Fired"
It blows my mind. Lawyer commentators, too.

IMHO, the broadcast media is blurring the line between reality and entertainment. Obviously, a profit motive, but these "reality" shows are another indicator that the "news" is being dumbed down into meaningless TV filler.

14. Wait.
Are you saying they reported, on MSNBC, who had been fired on The Apprentice last night?

Good god.

10. the 25 Million Dollar Hoax
The 25 Million Dollar Hoax would be a good name for the right-wing strategy. (Well, maybe more like 25 Trillion Dollar Hoax.)

Murdoch et al. push these sleazy, worthless shows on us, and the fundies get pissed off but direct their anger at LIEberals for our declining moral values. Meanwhile, Murdoch and his ilk get a massive tax cut for the wealthy and relaxed media ownership rules, while the fundies lose their jobs to outsourcing.

But the fundies are so obsessed with moral values, they don't even notice who's responsible for the dissapearance of the middle class.

That's one hell of a hoax.
