Who else thinks that Tom Hanks is one of the most overrated actors?
I mean, okay, he's done some good work. He's a lot better than some of the other actors out there. But it seems like every time he comes out with another movie you get hundreds of critics screaming, "OH MY GOD!! HE'S GONNA WIN ANOTHER OSCAR!!!"

Please. The guy's won 2 Oscars. One of which (for "Philadelphia") he might have deserved (maybe, I forget who he was up against), and the other ("Forrest Gump") for a movie that should have had its ass whipped into hamburger by "Pulp Fiction" and/or "The Shawshank Redemption".

3. I like him and think he's a good actor. While I love Shawshank Redemption
I cannot stand Pulp Fiction. I've never been able to watch it all the way through. Sometimes the whole world does not think the way we do, as recently evidenced by the 59+million idiots who inhabit America with us. :hi:

8. I'm so relieved to hear that!
I thought I was the only person on Earth who didn't like Pulp Fiction! And I too have tried to watch it more than once. Does nothing for me - seems like no more than a Quentin Tarantino ego trip - "ooh, look at me. I can do a cryptic movie! I'm so fabulous!"

self aggrandized Mr. Tarantino. It's just "in" to think he's a god I think. :hi:

5. Hanks is a likeable actor
and he did a good job in Philadelphia. I think you are right about "Gump" if he deserved a second AA it might have been better to give him it for his effective underplaying in "Saving Private Ryan".

to name two.

Not that I hate Tom Hanks. I really like him, but those were bad movies.

23. I LOVE Joe vs. the Volcano! I realize, though, I am nearly alone in that..
... sentiment.

Cheesy? Yes. Downright silly at times. Overly simplistic at times.

But it had a wonderful fairy tale quality I found, and still find, quite charming.

The scenes of his job in the first half of the film stack up with the best, and funniest, representations of the inanity of the workplace that I have ever seen.

9. I think he is THE most overrated actor
while I find him to be a good actor, there are others I believe to be better who get no credit, while people fall all over themselves for anything he does.

10. He was better doing comic roles IMO....
As for Forrest Gump.....:puke:

But watch Hanks in "A League of Their Own" or "Splash". He's great.

13. Oh, I agree. I used to really like him.
I mean, I basically destroyed my tape of "Joe Vs. the Volcano" from overwatching. But ever since "Gump" he's just gotten increasingly more annoying.

19. I think Hanks has bought into the whole "the new Jimmy Stewart" label....
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 12:29 PM by Jade Fox
that has been put on him by others.

The funny thing is that the real Jimmy Stewart made a late career decision
to do a lot of super-serious movies, which now no one can remember. They
are too busy enjoying him in "Harvey" and his other great comic roles.

14. {shrug} I watch a movie. That is it. I must be really strange,
but I've never cared at all how great or how poor an actor is, to me they're just doing a job. Same thing with who they are dating, or their sexual preference, I've just never really cared at all.

15. I agree, he's really good in some roles but not others and he's over
rated. Same thing with Meryl Streep except she is totally overrated and never should have gotten any Oscar.

20. Me
I avoid movies when he is in them. I haven't seen Forest Gump to this day because of all of the hype around it.

He's alright as an actor, but the hype doesn't live up to the reality.

25. Think about how hard the role of "Forrest Gump" was. Not a hint of cliche.
Sure, playing a developmentally disabled person is typically the easy way to garner an Oscar nomination. But it's easy to play a role like this "adequately", and that's usually all it takes to get an Oscar nod.

In that respect, it's not hard. A lot of actors have turned out cookie-cutter performance in similar roles (and won Oscars for them).

But Hanks took it beyond this. Nothing about the way Hanks played this role was "easy" or merely "adequate". He did so in such a way as to not leave a hint of cliche. Hanks gave the character Forrest Gump more dignity and depth than I've ever seen in such a character on the screen.

The scene where he asks Robin Wright if his son is "normal", the look of trepidation on his face as he worries his son is like him, but hopes he is not, was pure acting genius.

27. I disagree. He was awesome in Cast Away.
I think why people get tired of him is due more to the "Latter-Day Jimmy Stewart" roles he keeps getting than to any lack of talent on his behalf. He's actually played a lot of different roles, comic and dramatic. He has excellent comic timing and delivery.

So no, I don't think he's overrated, but that's my opinion.

28. He went
in my little black book as a Clinton-hater, over an extra-marital affair that was none of his business - still less of the neocons, whose transparent motives he seemed unable to see through. A bandwagon hero.
