Sounds like a good idea. Might be kind of dull though. You know how full of wind we academics can be. Just ask your students. LOL.

DUer formerly known as Redleg.

4. Indeed!
:-)

This would be a great place to discuss teaching philosphy, problems with students, research interests, etc.

The problems with students part would actually enliven it.

(One of my students told me yesterday that my lecture has nothing to do with the subject matter!) :-)

7. Some of them are bold, aren't they?
I had a student last week comment that my exams are too hard. I responded "Yeah, they are too hard, for some people."

9. My son went with me to class yesterday....
He drops in on us from time to time. The same student turned to my son, knowing that I am my son's mother, and said, "This class sucks."

LOL!

11. Very mature student there.
I haven't had to deal with too much overt stuff like that- perhaps because I am 6'4" and 250 lbs and ex-Army. The students may self-censor when I am around. On the other hand, I do want students to provide me useful feedback on how to improve their learning experience. Most don't even write comments on the course evals.

14. What's funny is that I have had the highest evaluations in...
my department for two years.

He's sour graping, I think, because he's not doing so well. (I've had numerous other students ask me to shut him up, because he takes pleasure in disrupting class. )

16. ag/forestry pest management research, or regulatory stuff?
Your wife, of course! I work in insect community ecology, mostly disturbance response and recovery in old growth forest systems (both terrestrial and benthic aquatic communities).

I've always known there were a number of other academics posting on DU, just not known-- in most cases-- who they were. :hi:

19. She just started working there as a quality auditor.
I don't really know what they do in the facility where she works.

Your work sounds interesting. If I were to go back to school again I would like to study ecology. Since I already have a Ph.D. my wife says "no f____ing way you are going back to school." She, of course, is right.

6. I'm in...
I always thought this would be a good idea for TAs to do...even a pay-for forum where you could ask "stupid" questions and be given basics and direction for pursuing more specific ideas. I am always getting sucked into tangents where there is no readily available general information.

This would work if you really want to understand something but don't have the ability or inclination to go to school...if you just want to understand it. i.e. "History of Haiti" would be a good topic for me.

12. Thanks, maybe...
such a forum could act as a springboard for an independent resource for collating knowledge with knowledge-seekers and by-passing formal structures that a lot of times serve to frame a career or resume. For people who don't want or need that, this would be an ideal alternative.

If people paid, say $5/mth,for access to answers because they can't google or google is hedged toward marketing more than information, the money would be well spent and such a minimal amount might grow the subscribers so the money to operate such an enterprise would grow, too. I think it would be a good opportunity for knowledgeable people to have more income than say what they might make academically...also, without the academic politics so there would be less constraint on relaying information.

I've been thinking about this for awhile but didn't know how to bring it up. There are a lot of knowledgable people here and I've often wanted to ask specific questions...but they wouldn't have been appropriate within the context of the discussion.

DU university

What's next?! :)

26. I'd like advice as to how to make best use of the Chronicle.
It takes forever to sift through the jobs section of the print version, but the online version is even more confusing because of the search terms.

First, I have to get all of the paperwork set up at either my undergrad or grad institution(s). But then...the Chronicle has some kind of "send your CV and application" function on its online version too, no?

I'm 46, and you'd think that I could have gotten a grip on this by now.

As a professor, especially an adjunct with little say or time to say it, I would relish a forum where we would speak, listen and share.

31. not a professor
But I am (was..still unemployed) an administrator in Higher Ed. Have a master's degree in Higher Ed Administration. I think this kind of forum would be GREAT. It would be nice to discuss issues in HE. I am surprised how many people do not know what is really happening in our colleges and universities!

I am all for it! Another star for you!
