8. any particular era?
I've always found post WWII 1945-1962 (Hiroshima to the Cuban Missile Crisis) kind of juicy! A-Bombs, Beat poets and Joe McCarthy! I was born in 1957, so I missed it all, first hand. But what a scary time to be aware in!

11. i actually love that era
one of my favorite authors (even though it's cliche) is kerouac; i find that people know way too little about the korean war or ike's presidency, and kennedy's first term is actually pretty interesting too (a few big missteps before he got his feet wet). i also like the mid-60's too; the whole "mutually-assured destruction" era fascinates me (i loved dr. strangelove too); although i was born in 1979.

15. Ike pussyed out with Joe
Joe McCarthy tried to focus his scattergun of innuendo on the U.S Army and Gen. George C. Marshall. Shouting about communists and homosexuals, McCarthy accused the top brass of allowing the institution of the Army to "go soft".
Gen. Marshall, of course, was a mentor to Ike. On one campaign swing through McCarthy's home state of Wisconsin, Eisenhower was to speak with Sen. Joe on the dais. Ike refused to chastise McCarthy in front of the home folks, even though Ike knew that the allegations against his friend and mentor, Marshall were complete lies!

Ike went on to praise McCarthy's efforts, though insiders claim he was furious.

14. hey, me too!
My study is a bit broader, 1914-1974, but fixates on Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon. I'm writing a final paper about the military-industrial complex and how it affects the American presidency.

I was born in 1983, so I definitely missed all of it. However, I was raised by two old hippies who told me everything. Their perspective has the interesting dichotomy of a 1950s childhood and adolescence in the 60s. They talk constantly about Watergate, escaping the draft, and the generation gap.

Since that's what I'm studying. I can post my "top forty most totally fucking insane Nixon quotes".

On edit: my list appears to have far more than I thought, thanks in part to one conversation with Haldeman and Ehrlichman in which almost everything he says is completely random and off the wall.

16. I haven't actually ranked them, though I probably should
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 06:32 PM by End of all Hope
But that one is definitely on there. Some of my favorites come from the Nixon tapes:

"I'm glad I'm not Brezhnev, being the Russian leader in the Kremlin. You never know if someone's tape recording everything you say."

"I'd rather use the nuclear bomb. Does that bother you? I just want you to think big, Henry, for Christ's sake."

"Now here's the point, Bob, please get me the names of the Jews. You know, the big Jewish contributors to the Democrats. Could we please investigate some of the cocksuckers? Thank you. That's all."
