Poll question: A deep philosophical question:
If you could choose, would you be the king of a homeless shelter, or a well-paid servant in the palace of the wealthiest person alive? Assume the wealthy man is a good person, and shares his wealth generously to his family, employees, and the world. BTW, this is for life.

7. That's kind of the point.
I think the challenge is trying to choose between two extremes. Would you ratehr be a ruler, or a servant (not a slave).

4. I'll take the freedom that a King enjoys
even if it's in abject poverty. Then I'll try to get some money out of that wealthy good person.

6. I agree.
At least you're free, not a servant. And you probably get used to lice too.

14. Assuming King has more freedom than servant !
Edited on Sat Nov-13-04 10:34 AM by atim
With that assumption I chose to be a king and also assuming nature is still not polluted to the extent that I cannot live off land or forest. In real life King may be as chained as a servant through his obsessive need for power and control and his constant fear of losing it. The best course is to be your true self, follow your bliss and be an observer of life to gain wisdom for your soul, which survives death. Think about it we are born naked and must leave naked ..can't take our physical form! So why play a socially conditioned role only? Ha ha ha!

9. As King of the Homeless

shelter, could I just give the shelter to all the homeless people who are there? That way it wouldn't be a homeless shelter, it would be a home for those who are there. If that choice isn't applicable, then definitely the homeless shelter anyway. The good, wealthy man is getting along fine without me, I might can do something to help the homeless folks.

15. So, where is this homeless shelter located?
...if it's NYC, I'll take that job:silly: And if I'm "queen" there, does that mean I get part of the panhandling booty?

16. We'd all be so lucky to be able to choose option 2
Most of us have chosen option 2 to some extent accept that many of us are servants to people who are not all that good and are underpaid. This is the plight of the working class.
I wouldn't want to live in a homeless shelter for life. I find no use in leadership unless I am able to make things better for myself and "my people". Why else would I choose to lead?

17. This is a very Miltonian choice....
Paradise Lost--Satan would rather reign in Hell than serve in Heaven. Guess I'm on Satan's side!

18. Isn't this a Paradise Lost question?
The choice Satan is presented with, he says something like "I would rather rule in hell than serve in heaven"?

Was that milton?

20. Servant
The reason being, I am familiar with homeless shelters. Being king, or in my place queen, could lead to a Lord of the Flies type mentality. If I was a servant in the wealthiest person's home, it'd be all about sedition. I'd be a spy. I'd steal from the rich and give to the poor. A mover and shaker from behind the scenes,I could change the world. If nothing else, I could sell pictures to the National Dnquirer of naked rich people
