DU room suggestion...Pagan/Witch/Wicca
I don't know if the admins want to add a religion room and have several sub-rooms, but I thought this would be a good idea. I would also be OK with a Pagan room being a subset of the already established Metaphysical, et al room.

Being in Oklahoma, I really could use some witchy friends to chat with and bounce ideas off of. It would not be just for those who practice Wicca, but anyone who is accepting of witchcraft and paganism.

So what thinks you?

Brightest Blessings!

(I read the rules and I don't think this outside of what we can ask for, but I guess I will find out! :))

and could probably get a couple more people.

Been working for 15 hours now. Going to bed, but will check back tomorrow morning to see if it's possible.

So mote it be!

5. Hmmm..interesting suggestion.
Personally, I wouldn't want to see religion of any inclination highlighted on DU. But to each his or her own, I suppose.

And, just to be clear, Yes, I do post a lot of acrid opinions on religion. I am now an atheist through and through. However, I spent 10 years helping build Asatru (I worked closely with the Ring of Troth, even editing Idunna for a while, I then went on to edit Theod magazine for a while, as well). I was formerly a very spiritual person, so I'm not sure if my immediate negative opinion of your idea might be likened to that of an ex-smoker being asked about smoking... =)

6. Honesty
Well, you are entitled to your opinion and you were very polite about expressing it! Did you see there is a post suggesting an atheist room? I "signed up" for that one because I think it would be interesting.

I can appreciate your feelings, but I also think it might be a really good thing to allow people of faith (or not) to express themselves in that genre. Perhaps it would be nothing but a big flame fest, but I really think it could lead to some healing in our group!

Thanks for your input!

16. I think we should be careful to..
make sure that any such forum doesn't end up looking like a 'response to' or set up because of the Right's focus on such things.

As for the atheist forum...I've got mixed feelings there, as well.

Take care,

Will

12. Yes there are!
I know I am not the only witch in OK, but there are not a large amount. It is hard to break into the group because people can be fired for being a witch here, so people are suspicious of outsiders.

So, it seems we have a few interested...we need a few more "stars!" But, thanks to EVERYONE who stated this would be a nice idea. Any ideas for a mission statement?

20. Half way there!
Thank you! You could still propose a "mission." It seems many people want to learn more, so I am thinking that is part of the mission right there..."to provide an opportunity for those interested in paganism to explore the richness of ancient (and some new) religious thoughts, beliefs, and structures." What do you think?

Brightest Blessings!

22. sounds good... how about
Wicca, Pagan and Ancient Lore group. We welcome all practitioners and respectful visitors to join us in a forum to explore the richness of ancient (and some new) religious thoughts, beliefs, and structures. The exploration of female/women wisdom is of special interest but we will gladly welcome all of the ancient learning including Native American lore.

23. not bad at all!
I love the addition of ancient lore. Although not a "spiritual" path, per se, it is something I am sure a good number of pagans and witches are interested in discussing. I think I will also add the magickal practices of ALL religions. There are quite a few "traditional" religions that have a great magickal side to them!

42. I like the idea of a Wicca, Pagan, and Ancient Lore room
Right now, we have a thread in the Religion forum, but it would be nice to have a room of our own.

As a Pagan, I am tolerant and inclusive by nature, so I don't mind if it is a broad mission statement and I don't mind visitors who don't follow a Pagan-type path, as long as they are polite.

So here's another star!

I am waiting to hear from Skinner. I sent a PM. Should I send an email? I wasn't real sure if I was supposed to PM or email. I will wait until Tuesday, if I don't hear anything. I am sure they are busy.

I think this will be a fun group! I hope it gets approved!

25. Actually have 10 now
I have another similar thread in an even slower moving room! :) I think I will PM him/her and ask for him/her to sign here. I reread the rules for making a room and it says that at least ten have to agree to the "mission statement." Once I create it, should I PM everyone above and have them stamp their "OK" to it? BTW...thanks for your help!

27. Mission statement!
Edited on Sat Nov-13-04 03:26 PM by Behind the Ageis
If you approve of a Pagan/Witchcraft/Wicca group and are OK with the following mission statement, please reply below this post with an "OK" or "Yes" post. You can add anything else you want too!

Mission statement for a Pagan/Witchcraft/Wicca group:

I propose the creation of a forum, known as Pagan/Witchcraft/Wicca, to be created.

This room is meant to be a positive addition to DU. It is not intended that this room be a place to "bash" other religions considered more "mainstream." In addition, all forms of paganism and magickal beliefs may be discussed, including beliefs from mainstream religions. We would also welcome those who do not have a spiritual belief structure.

Therefore, it is proposed, the purpose of the room would be three-fold:

1} Allow fellow pagans, witches, and other magickal practitioners a place to discuss spiritual beliefs, worship methods, and other issues (media portrayal, as an example) tied to these beliefs.

2) Allow those who do NOT practice any of the aforementioned, to ask questions and explore a different belief structure, in a civil manner according to the DU policies.

3} To be a place where pagans (et. al.) can seek guidance from others like them without derision or fear of ridicule.

On edit: add "ancient lore" to the title of the group
Define paganism as those who celebrate multiple dieties/female creator or those who worship the Earth, etc.
Define witchcraft as the practice of using spells, prayers, etc to utilize natural forces to elcit change.

Wicca is probably the most misunderstood religion out there. For years fundy whack jobs have been decrying it as satanism, and having dated a Wiccan for years I can assure you it is not.

My first thought was "good idea." Then I thought, why so exclusive?
Perhaps there could be an all inclusive religion/spiritual forum for various spiritual concerns. It could involve people from all spiritual walks, including atheists. Otherwise, to be fair, there would have to be a Christian forum, Jewish forum, Asatru, Buddist, etc.

For specific Pagan/Wiccan forums, try www.witchvox.com.

33. I thought about that
Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with having a "Religion" main thread and several subcategories. Religion and politics do not mix well, but there should be a way to discuss with others like us (same or similar beliefs) in a "safe" environment.

Thank you for your input!

Brightest Blessings!

41. Be proud of what you are. Don't let anyone intimidate you for it
If they couldn't attack us for being Pagan, they would attack us just as viciously for something else. Anything to feed their harsh, bitter, vindictiveness. We need to be true to what we are and celebrate it. Don't let them force us back into the broom closet. We have a struggle ahead of us to win the equal rights promised us in the Constitution. That's the only way rights have ever been won and safeguarded. Be bold and take what's yours. America will be a better place for our defending pluralism and tolerance.
