1. Where was this photo taken?
Looks like the Puget Sound

I've seen Navy ships like this in the Puget Sound. (Washington State has lots of Navy bases).

2. I'm not sure
I think it's leaving San Diego harbor in the early 80s. She has been in Bremmerton for short visits. She was decommissioned about 10 years ago.

24. San Diego, parts of it anyway
look and feel very much like Seattle-Bremerton. I was there ONCE and have lived in Seattle all my life, but ws Totally blown away at how at home I felt there. I know this photo is San Diego, but I know why you'd think it was Puget Sound.

23. I was on a "42" but not that 42.
I was on CV42.

It sure makes me feel old to know that there's a ship that was commisioned and then decommisioned in the time since I got out of the USN.

26. I know what you mean.
I was in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club (65 - 69) when there were CVA's, CVA(N)'s and CVS's. Now I think they're back to CV's again.

6. No salt? What does that mean?
It's an ocean going vessel.

8. You are correct. It's a ship.
Looking at it now, my no salt comment appears rather smart-ass. Sorry, that wasn't my intention. Although it's technically a ship, salty sailors would call it a boat.

9. Out of curiosity, why would the old salts call it a boat?
Because it's not as big as other ones? Or because it's not a battle cruiser or destroyer, etc.?

11. It's more like a term of endearment
Like calling a major city one's town.

20. A navy friend once told me
"The Navy is on the boat", and he (a pilot) was referring to aircraft carriers as "boats".

21. Thanks
I had never heard an officer refer to a ship as a boat. I've heard pilots are a different breed of officer though.

7. WOW! Meeeemmmmmorrriiies like the corner of my miiiind
I remember that ship well. Several of my (female) boot camp mates ended up on it. At the time, there were only a few types of ships that allowed female sailors - one was sub tenders.

It came to the Gulf once or twice when I was stationed in Bahrain, as well.

I might weep.

Naaah.

10. Love boat
That was her nickname after the first gulf war. Many of the women on board ended up pregnant during that deployment.

12. That is San Diego, Point Loma to be precise, just about the
#3 buoy in the SD channel.

Yep, that is good old Buliding 42. Thing was welded to the dock at NAVSTA SD for so long it was a landmark on aero charts. (g)

Quite the hunk of crap, but I hear she was a good feeder, which sometimes is all that matters.

Thanks. My memory sucks. I haven't heard (or read) the term Point Loma in quite a few years. Building 42 - that's funny!

It's really hard to see in that pic. Maybe this will help. The white boat in the bottom pic.

technically a barge, not a boat.

Let it rest, you can't win.

to be.
