Star Trek or No star trek
Edited on Mon Nov-15-04 01:32 AM by FM Arouet666
The admin has offered a very valid point with regard to the proposed group. It may be a bit too narrow, i.e. low traffic, for DU. I must admit, I was concerned about the same thing.

How about three options

1. No, I want a Star Trek only group to deal only with Trek in all its incarnations and feel it would have enough attendance.

2. A general SciFi forum, dealing only with Scifi, all types of media books, movies, TV etc. But should be restricted to science fiction. Star Trek, Babylon 5, Alien etc but no general fantasy stuff. I.e no Lord of the rings, Harry Potter etc.

3. A general SciFi/fantasy forum. This would include all science fiction and fantasy. Most inclusive, but maybe too much traffic.

Please weigh in with your opinions and we can drop the admin a line with the results.

4. I would vote: 1,2, and a distant 3
Edited on Mon Nov-15-04 01:23 AM by Endangered Specie
1 I'd like the most (I feel we have enough traffic in with ST alone to withstand us, us trekkers are loyal folk).
2 I would be fine with, if we do this, we could indicate that ST is the primary one of discussion, and I imagine that ST would dominate the group anyhows.
3 I really would not like this... it would be WAAY to large, fantasy and anime people can have their own groups.

edit: perhaps we could start out as a #1, and if it becomes necessary (insufficent traffic, and requests for other specific Sci-Fi groups, as per Skinners concern), we can change to a #2.

I think that would be the best compromise.

I'd support #1 if there is enough demand.

8. Thanks, I just emailed most of those on the thread
I would like a "one" also, but the admin had some concerns when I dropped him a line the other night. Two may be acceptable, but three will definitely be too much.

9. When I get a star, I would be interested in #1
I love Star Trek absolutely yes.

#2 is OK though I am not nuts about that much other Sci-Fi.

#3 is too general.

10. #3 for me.
Edited on Mon Nov-15-04 01:39 AM by jinuu
Don't make me choose between ST and Harry Potter!

Besides, I'm a SciFi snob. Thumbs up to ST in most its incarnations, Twilight Zone and Stanger In A Strange Land. Thumbs down to most eveything else SciFi. Same with Fantasy. So a forum that embraced both would make me a happy and more frequent visitor.

Edited to add: If not #3, I definately vote for #1. I'd probably frequent a ST only forum as much as I'd hang in a general sci-fi/fantasy forum.

11. 2 or 3
If there's a "Star Trek only" group, it might be harder to convince the admins to allow a "Sci-Fi group" as well. What would be the point? Besides, there's a LOT more excellet sci-fi out there, and to exclude everything else completely puts Star Trek on too high of a pedestal. (I mean it's good, but it's NOT the end-all be-all of sci-fi.)

I'd prefer 3. The users of DU are savvy enought to pick out threads they want to participate in.

2,1,3
2 because i've got other shows, movies, books I like just as much as Star trek.
1 because if you all feel like you want to concentrate on Star Trek thats ok with me
3 because I'm more into scifi than fantasy

Although I know there are a lot of Trek fans here, I for one couldn't care less about DS9, Voyager, or the current Enterprise series. And I would be much more interested in learning about sci-fi books and movies that I know little or nothing about.

On the other hand, having a sci-fi/fantasy forum would generate a lot of posting about Harry Potter and other sword/sorcery stuff that I feel also meshes little with science fiction, although I think there should definitely be a separate fantasy forum for that kind of thing.

However, have been reading SciFi for 40+ years (Heinlein's Starman Jones, if you're interested).

#2 for me.

24. I'd drop by a group like 2 or 3 from time to time
I would probably not visit a sole trek site. I watch Enterprise a few times a year, and would discuss it then. I would like a general Sci Fi forum to chat about books and film though.
