Need Elementary Ed Teachers' advice:

Is Language Arts a new course area in elementary school? If I teach Language Arts to my son, does this contain English grammar?

I am buying books for home school and didn't know if I needed both a Language Arts and an English grammar book. I'm using a lot of McGraw Hill.

1. "English" was called "Language Arts" in my children's schools

in Maryland back in the 1980's and forward.
(Not a teacher, just a parent)

3. Depending on state and district

Language Arts is a broad category including writing, grammar, oral language, research skills, etc.

Grammar is word usage, punctuation, sentence construction, etc.

Some teachers feel that teaching grammar out of context (ie in drills) is not helpful. Others feel that the drills can help after meaningful instruction.

5. Language Arts includes it all.

Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. And, hopefully, thinking.

Grammar is included in listening and speaking.
