Christian Principal Fired For Having Himself Whipped In Front Of Students
<snip>

WASILLA -- Matanuska Christian School's principal has been fired and a teacher has quit over a disciplinary incident in which the principal had himself whipped in front of two students.

Principal Steve Unfreid, who said he was inspired in his choice of disciplinary tactics by the actions of Jesus, asked teacher Joe Brost to whip him in front of two male students in the school's basement last month after the boys were caught kissing girls in the locker room for the second time in a week.

Unfreid, in an interview Friday at his home, acknowledged he should have called the boys' parents first but expressed no regret for his behavior.

The school's board of directors unanimously decided in a closed door session Sunday to fire Unfreid.

Brost resigned Monday night at a crowded meeting in the school's chapel. He did not want to comment for this story.

Roughly 120 students now attend the Palmer school. About 20 students have left in the incident's aftermath, school officials said. It could not be learned whether the departing youths were motivated to leave by their support of Unfreid.

In a letter sent to the school's board Wednesday, Unfreid said he would not fight his dismissal. He also apologized for "outbursts at the school board meeting" on Monday.

"Inspired by the actions of Jesus?" - That is rank heresy. Jesus never instructed his disciples to whip him.

14. Let's see if I can get this straight
The kids did something considered "bad" (OMG - kissing girls!). Mr. Principal decides to punish them. Taking a page from Jesus (?), he has HIMSELF whipped.

Now, I'm a little rusty on Christian theology, but wasn't Jesus whipped and crucified in order to "save" all us mortal slobs? So this principal here thinks he's equal to Jesus? Am I getting this right?

Sounds to me he ought to be burned at the stake for heresy. Do they still do that? Probably will in another couple of years.

These people have their Bible all messed up...

Then the principal took off his belt, gave it to Brost, and instructed the teacher to "discipline me like you would discipline your own son," he recalled.

27. Hear me on this, please.
This is not that weird in fundigelical circles. It's a VERY common disciplinary technique that just about everyone I know (I grew up in fundigelical insanity) had practiced on them at one point or another. You screw up, and the parent (it was always parent, never heard of it from a principal) tells you that just like Jesus took our punishment because He loved us so much, the parent is going to take your punishment to show you that while your wrongdoing has to be punished, they're going to show you love like Jesus did.

THEN (and this is the key to the real abuse of the technique, which the principal seems to have fucked up) the parent hands the child the belt, paddle, ruler, or whatever, and makes the CHILD spank the PARENT. If the child is reluctant, the parent says, "OK. Then I'll spank you."

My brothers all, when it was their turn for this technique, happily swatted dad with the paddle. I couldn't do it, so I got the usual spanking (he went pretty easy on me that time, though).

Anyway, I am NOT defending it -- the guy clearly has a fetish he should practice with other consenting adults, leaving adolescents out of it -- I just wanted to tell you that this is a very common thing in certain circles.

31. You're welcome. It makes me sick, too.
I just wanted people to know that this possibly isn't some fantasy he's been looking for a chance to act out for years. Probably something similar was done to him, or he's been taught the technique by a pastor or something.

I will say in my father's defense that he was a great dad and he loves us all ferociously. He was just old-school. Traditional. None of us were ever spanked past about age 12 (except for when he and one of my brothers had a knock-down drag out, but that was more of a guys-fighting thing than a spanking, LOL). He did something that a man of Gawd told him would help us learn to love Jesus. He didn't know better.

35. Yeah. He was.
He never missed a recital, ball game, or anything else. Went to every PTA conference. Made a point of spending one-on-one time, even if he was working so many hours that he didn't have time for himself, with each of us every day. I never left the house without a hug and an "I love you." He made sure I could change my own oil and balance a checkbook and reset a circuit breaker before I left home. He risked jail when a high school boyfriend assaulted me by beating the shit out of the guy.

Yes, he was a GREAT father. That he was brought up with discipline by belts and moderated to occasional paddlings with his own kids does not make him a monster.

Please don't make me go postal on you, matcom. You don't know him.

37. I can sympathize...
My father was abusive because that's the way he was taught as a child.
He also never missed a recital; and once gave an old boyfriend of mine hell for honking his horn instead of coming to the door and knocking when it was time for our date.

I hated and feared him for years before I realized that he simply didn't know any better. It gives us all the more reason to fight this fundy scourge of abuse and intolerance. What we're truly fighting is ignorance.

42. I am very sorry for what you went through.
I'm glad you've been able to reach an understanding.

My father occasionally did things that were stupid (the above example being one of them), but he was not, in my judgment, "abusive." I got about a dozen paddlings when I was a kid, and every single time I'd purposefully done something stupid. He never left bruises on me or anything like that. I understand that spanking is a very controversial practice, and there are a tremendous number of people who were spanked as a child and feel that it scarred them for life, even people who never experienced anything the law would call abuse. I respect their feelings totally. I am not one of them. I have not been harmed by having been spanked as a child. The spankings to hugs ratio in my childhood was about 12:20,000,000.

I have read my grandparents' diaries, and they were quite candid about regularly beating the shit out of dad with belts and straps and sticks. HE was abused. In the FIFTIES, he went to school with marks so severe that the principal called his parents and had a talk with them, which just wasn't done back then -- it was "family business." People stayed out of it. That it was bad enough to cause something like that to happen tells me it was VERY VERY VERY fucking bad.

That my father grew up that way and became a very, very loving father makes him a hero, in my opinion.

Also, I would MUCH rather have gone to bed with a sore backside than be grounded for weeks at a time. With a house full of boys (I'm the only girl) if he'd used grounding, it would have caused INSANE logistics. Can we go on a family picnic on Saturday? Well, I don't know. Mike's grounded, and I think David -- no wait, a second, did David finish his grounding on Wednesday? I can't remember. And didn't you say you were going to put Tommy on restriction for failing that science test?

I know that my opinion about my childhood is not in line with liberal orthodoxy that all spanking is bad all the time no matter what, and if enough people are still reading this thread I will probably get flamed.

But I AM an expert on me, my life, and my family, and I'm saying that FOR OUR PARTICULAR FAMILY, the occasional visit with the ping-pong paddle did not scar anybody.

Most of my brothers have kids, and some of them spank and some of them don't. I don't have any kids, and don't plan to, but if I change my mind I don't know if I would spank or not.

I appreciate what you said about "ignorance," because there are so many people who go overboard and insane with their parenting because of religious insanity. I was a teenage babysitting machine for about five years, and I had people in church leave me BELTS to use on FOUR YEAR OLDS. (I never did.) There were people in church who had dowel rods IN EVERY CORNER OF EVERY ROOM. There were people who terrorized their kids, and all because of one verse in the Bible.

It makes me angry that there are otherwise reasonable people, including some here at DU, who would equate THAT with one ping pong paddle in a drawer that came out about once a year per child.

That's a form of ignorance, too, in my opinion.

Sorry to ramble. It's early and I'm still thinking too hard.

38. glad you mentioned it; I had never heard of this although in my
grammar school the nuns would do a group punishment if one or 2 kids did something wrong. Once some brat stole something from another kid and the entire class had to stay late after school and write 1000 times thou shalt not steal. What that accomplished is beyond me; it sure didn't make the kid who stole the stuff stand up and say he/she did it so that the rest of us could go home on time.
