Actually, U2 didn't get paid for that iPod commercial...
I would have put this in the U2-bashing thread, but it's so crowded I didn't think anyone would hear me.

There was an article in the New York Times yesterday about the new U2 album, and in it Bono mentions that the band didn't get any money for doing that commercial.

But what's the big deal? "Vertigo" fucking rules...

1. It's not about money.
It's about diluting your integrity by allowing your music to sell product. I'm disappointed in U2, a band who have built up a reputation for integrity over 25 years.

5. uh, they are businessmen
part of the product being sold is their own, they, in essence get free advertising for thier new song. it's a bit strange to think of a group that has sold 100,000,000 albums and raked in the better part of a billion dollars touring as not 'selling a product.' they are the product.

6. That's it, though. They are the product.
Why are they selling the I-Pod, someone else's product?

13. Because it's their product too
They're selling a special edition ipod that's loaded with their entire back catalog, along with their new cd. I really don't see what the fuss is about.

The only thing they are marketing is a device that plays their songs, made by a company that is consistantly listed as one of the top places in the country to work. How does that compromise their integrity as musicians? Having had to make a living as one myself, I can tell you I've had to do far worse than endorse a quality product I'd personally love to own.

10. Yep
I see nothing wrong with it.

I also see nothing wrong with someone deciding not to allow their music advertise someone else's product.

Good music doesn't stop being good music just because a marketing firm decides they like it and want to use it.

8. Mute it when the commercial comes on.
And I take it you won't be buying their new CD? ;)

11. U2 have become self-plagiarists -
I used to adore them, but for the last decade, their music has degenerated frightfully into largely self indulgent crap.

I like the idea that they did the iPod spot for free, however...shows that they still have some class left...

9. hm but they're making money out of the whole project
the commercial itself is just one aspect of it.

15. Hell hath no fury like a group's dedicated fan "disappointed"
Yikes. This thread and the other one make me laugh. I believe one of the best things to be said about U2 is that they are relevant enough and have enough of a body of work that they can be hashed and rehashed by fans who are either "BUMMED" that they sold out or still love what they are trying to do musically.

Hey, it's all about the music...if you like it you like it. If you don't...well, you don't.

But I like them and I just listened to the entire All that you can't leave behind CD on the way to work just to spite ye all. (skipped Beautiful Day. Can't listen to that one. ever.

17. Sting did the same thing with "Desert Rose"
It was a great song, but it didn't fit well into any specific genre and radio stations weren't playing it.

Sting did a Jaguar commercial and used "Desert Rose" and didn't charge Jaguar a dime. Jaguar got Sting and Sting got thousands of people calling radio stations asking them to "play the song from the Jaguar commercial".

Actually, I thought it was brilliant.
