I mean, they're not human, or any of the major races of beings on Middle Earth.

They're more like the protector of the trees, who guard them and keep them out of trouble. Apparently trees can get pretty pissed off from time to time.

And I have no problems setting Shelob hunting republicans - after all, I can easily see both her and Anne Coulter as the types that could justify eating her own young, as well as anyone unlucky enough to be caught by her for mating should it suit her purposes. As for allies or "political compatriots" - hey, when Shelob's hungry, anything is fair game.
