Maine Coon owners, need advice
In August, one of our hardware people gave us a six-week-old female kitten. She weighed a pound and a half when we walked through the door with her.

It is now November, the kitten weighs six and a half pounds and is starting to outgrow the other cats in the house. She has Maine Coon-like features (except for the polydactylism; this cat only has five toes on her front paws).

Therefore, how big can I expect this cat to get?

1. If she's a real Maine Coon, she won't reach full-grown size for around
4 years. Maine Coons take much longer to reach their full growth than most other cats :)

3. Okay, I see the thread's sinking already!
I don't have a Maine Coon myself, but I do know a little about them (and Jen6 hasn't answered yet, she's one of the people around here I know does). The males can hit twenty pounds easy, and the females can make 12-15 without a stretch. It usually takes them at least two years to reach full growth, and they don't always make full adult weight until they're three or four. Big isn't unusual, in other words -- sounds like she's about on track.

4. 20-30 points if she's not overweight.
Huge! if she does get overweight.

Overall, expect her to be bigger than most small dogs.

6. My Maine Coon topped out at 18+ lbs
Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 10:34 PM by EnfantTerrible
when he was at his heaviest... he's now about 11 lbs of absolute ear sucking, head butting, LOVE. He's about 11 yrs old now and I've read that they can live over 20 years... they are amazingly wonderful kitties.

on edit: Just asked my wife how big Dino was at his heaviest... she says 22+lbs. We put him on a diet (the commercial brands of wet food are like McDonalds in nutrition) of human grade cat food (spots stew). He became a new animal, full of energy, like a kitten again actually and he was 9 years old at the time. More info than you needed, I know, but if you don't want her too huge then her diet is most important.

7. Depends on her parents
The males generally are humongous.
My little girl is only 7 pounds, but has itty bitty kitty syndrome, so believes she is a TIGER!

9. I never saw the mother
She stuck around Malina's house long enough to get the kittens--there were two, this cat and an orange tom, who isn't as large--to the point where they didn't need to nurse constantly, then hauled ass. Malina put them on KMR in a dish and we left her on it for about a week after we got her. (We stopped offering it when the kitten lost interest in it.)

When we got her home, we had her on kitten chow with canned kitten food mixed into it for two weeks--the two weeks was all it took for her to figure out how to get on the table (the route: climb on the shelf under the 20-gallon aquarium, then on the ledge around the 55-gallon aquarium, then on the table) and start eating what everyone else gets. After that, screw the kitten chow; she wouldn't touch it.

We are dreading one thing: the kitten likes to jump from the floor into your arms; can you imagine what that's gonna be like with 25 pounds of flying cat?

She owns Maine coons and she knows everything about them.

Maine Coons are large cats and she will outgrow most of the other breeds.

14. I had a Maine Coon
Long story but I don't have him anymore. :(

Anyway, he was very large (about 18 lbs.) and they don't fully mature/develop until they are about 3 years old.

They never have much of a *meow* either FYI.

I'll say one thing, the one I had made me fully understand what the statement "Curiosity killed the cat" meant. He was one VERY mischievous cat and he loved water.

17. My male weighs 19 lbs., but he is fat.
I haven't measured him from nose to tail, but he's long. He can easily snatch things off the counter. We have lever handles on our interior doors, and he can reach the handle and open the door without any effort.
