1. The French town where much of it was filmed, Flavigny zur Ozerain
is an ancient walled town in the Côte d'Or region of Burgandy, beautiful viewed from a distance.

No chocolate shops there, but anise candy is made there and sold in beautiful tin boxes. Le Grange is a former old grainery next to the church. It has been converted into a cooperative restaurant, run by farmers' wives who bring in fresh produce from the farm and serve it, with fantastic Burgundian wine, in a rustic setting. Highly recommended for lunch!

All of Burgundy is a fantastic area of France to spend many weeks--so much to see.

3. It was all right
Though I thought it was slightly too Hollywood-y for my tastes.

Check out "Like Water For Chocolate" sometime. It's a Mexican movie, based on a (Spanish, I think) book. It has a lot of the same themes, but a lot more artistically done.
