how to deal with tailgaters?

I need a solution...either a device, bumper sticker or something that I can do. Some people just don't get it and I got hit in the back a few days ago. It a pain dealing with insurance, body shops etc. I just don't want to be hit.

Someone suggested I put the emergency lights on for a few seconds if they're too close.

the sudden slowing down without brake lights is a big way to scare them into flying straight. besides, you never know when a car can brake down and suddenly starts to rapidly slow down without the brake lights coming on. there's a reason why you need to leave space in front of you when driving. besides, here in CA he who rear ends is almost default guilty -- shouldn't have been that close in the first place :D a helpful reminder isn't a bad thing. ;)

That'd do the trick. Just flick the light on and blind the bastard :)

Smoke screen for your car...

Run a rubber tubing into your exhaust manifold from the drivers
compartment. Find a bottle with a small neck that will fit the hose on
the drivers compatment and fill it with motor oil or castor oil.
Whenever you are getting a high speed chase, just insert the bottle into
the hose. If your hose is too small, you will have to use a plastic
squeeze bubble or drill a hole into the other end of the bottle and cork
it. When you uncork it, air can get in and the oil will go down the
tubing to the red hot exhaust manifold, burn, and make a lot of smoke.

Its great to see them slam on their breaks in the rear view. I don't recommend this in heavy traffic.

and that's when I got hit. The braking lights apparently mean nothing. I almost hit the other car because I knew she wouldn't stop on time and I was trying to make room

and scare the shit out of them. They ALWAYS back up after that.

If they keep tailgating, I keep going slower. Pretty soon, they get it.

Oh. You mean the highway kind? Slow down a little, and/or give a slight tap on the brakes.

but my daughter is usually in the car with me so that never works out. So i usually maintain my speed or let up on the gas a little.

I do a couple of quick "get the fuck off my ass" taps to the brake. If this doesn't get the point across (which it usually doesn't because people who tailgate are too fucking stupid to get the point) , I gradually slow down. Gradual enough such that the fuckwad behind me has plenty of time to adjust his/her speed and not hit me. The rationale is that either the fuckwad will be encouraged to change lanes and no longer be a menace, or that if a collision does occur because I have to brake quickly and dickhead tailgater doesn't have time to react, there is less likelihood for injury. Furthermore there's the element of vengance: "Wanna tailgate me motherfucker??? Hope you enjoy doing 25 mph less than the speed limit."
