"That's why you ain't allowed at the First Baptist Church no more."
From my favorite movie...guess which.

So why would you not be allowed at the First Baptist Church anymore, if you wanted to go?

I wouldn't be allowed because I buck authority and would howl if the preacher mentioned that women were to follow men, who are the head of the household.

1. I don't know that I've ever been to a Baptist church
They would probably look strangely at me as I prayed the Lord's prayer in Aramaic. If they asked about it, they might be upset to find out what the direct translation of the words are. If you're interested, check out "Prayers of the Cosmos" by Neil Douglas-Klotz.

2. I believe that Jesus meant what he said...
When he said:

"The kingdom of God IS within you." (emphasis mine, not was, will be or might be someday) He said this to a random crowd. Therefore the kingdom of God is already within each of us.

"It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a wealthy man to enter the kingdom of heaven."

You don't hear much about those two phrases in your average Southern Baptist church.

That, and the fact that I'm a Buddhist.

5. Heh. You sound like a Quaker.
Quakers also believe that the spirit of God is an "inner light" that lives within everybody.

In the words of The Simpson's Rev. Lovejoy: "Have you ever thought about any of the other major religions? They're all pretty much the same."

3. I walked out the First Baptist Church and never went back...
when I was 18. Our church had a real kick-ass choir, and after the Wednesday night service, a lot of people hung around to listen to them practice. This particular night, they were working on a really rockin' black gospel type of song, and myself and some other teens were out in the lobby listening. You know, the rhythm was infectious, and a few of us started dancing around, clapping our hands, truly appreciating the music. One of the deacons came rushing out and admonished us for dancing! I think I said something like "This is just nuts!", walked out the front door and never returned.

6. Yep!
Remember when he was having dinner with Von and all the others. The girl who was to be Karl's date told Von that everyone knew that he was gay, and that's why he wasn't allowed at the FBC anymore.

My favorite line from the whole movie. :-)

....my favorite line is..."...yeah...I think I see one right there!" After the boy tells him his dad always said potted meat was made outta *peckers* :7

.....that movie is brilliant and DEVERVED a SWEEP at the OSCARS that year IMHO...it is the most perfect depiction of rednecks in a small southern town..."...and one o'those boys was from Arkansas...giddit!"

on edit...RIP John Ritter...his performance was magnificent! :loveya:

8. Yes...I agree with every point you made.
It does ever so accurately demonstrate life in a small town. I dated a guy just like Doyle once--they are crawling all over the south. :-)

The kid who played Frank was an excellent little actor--I don't know if he's ever been in any other movies since.
