Is Drop Dead Fred a piece of crap, or a misunderstood masterpiece?
I'll take the side of misunderstood masterpiece.

This 1991 film is a very brilliant comedy on the surface. Of course Rik Mayall is supposed to be the center of the comedy, and he's very funny. But I'd argue that Phoebe Cates is even funnier. Her performances at the fancy restaurant, the classical music concert, and the wine tasting party are brilliant. The scream that she lets out when Fred scares her when she's wiping the makeup off of her face in front of the mirror always makes me laugh. Carrie Fisher is also very funny with her deadpan delivery of her lines. This is my favorite comedy of all time.

But if you look at it at a deeper level, this movie is, above all else, a very serious psychological drama with a lot of meaning to it. The mother/daughter relationship is very detailed and complex, and I've never seen anything like it in a movie before. I also like the message of standing up to defend yourself from those who are bullying you, and taking control of your life. This really is a great film.

What do you think?

1. one of my faves, brilliant!
I agree with you on each point! Too many people discount it as fluff, but I always thought it had a bigger message than what you first assume. I love how tenderly it regards the innocence of childhood. (and makes fun of adults!)

2. Loved it..
But mostly because of Rik Mayall (I was a big The Young Ones fan). Although Phoebe Cates will always hold a special place in my heart based on her Fast Times.. Uhm.. performance. ;)

4. Somewhere between. I loved it, but
I wouldn't rate it a masterpiece. Just a really good movie.

Phoebe. Damn, what man my age didn't have a crush on her at some point?

7. I loved it
I was a kid when it first came out, but I've seen it several times since...every time it's on t.v. I get sucked into watching it! I never really thought about it in the way you described (psychological drama) but I do see your point.

As a kid, I always loved the part when Phoebe's character went to see a therapist, and there were all those other children's imaginary friends in the room.

Oh, and Rik Mayall is a comedy god. Period. I only wish his partner in crime Ade Edmonson had been in the film. They are hilarious together!
