Who's the best non- studio backing band
In this respect I mean a unit that performs behind one particular performer and as a unit does not do studio work for multiple artists. So this would eliminate the MG's, Funk Brothers, MFSB, Muscle Shoals, etc.

With that in mind I put up the Bad Seeds as in Nick Cave and .....

For the most part, the individuals came from various European based post-punk bands who specialized in a heavy aggressive sound. Yet, behind Nick Cave they have developed into a unit capable of performing almost every style of music in the pop idiom including folk, jazz, chamber rock, ballads and blues without sounding like dilettantes or posers.

1. The Hawks behind Dylan in '66....
The Attractions (E.Costello), The Rumor (Graham Parker), The Joe Jackson Band (who just reunited for an album and tour - Joe realizes he never made better music than when he had these guys behind him)

Hmmmmm....who else..... I guess that the rules preclude me from mentioning most reggae bands.....

2. Second the motion on The Rumour.
Many members came from Brinsley Schwartz, the legendary pub rock band that also featured Nick Lowe.

Well, in that case, add Rockpile to the list.

4. Yeah, absolutely.
Most of the three bands came from the British pub rock scene (god, wouldn't it be great if we had a "pub rock scene" here in the US these days?), for instance, Bruce Thomas of the Attractions played in Chilli Willy, etc. They all SOUNDED like they came from Pub Rock, and added racing stripes when punk arrived. That's why, as bands, they excelled at playing music as oppposed to making art statements, like most British punk bands.

3. James Brown Band
Years ago I read an account from one of his musicians what it was like to play in Vietnam (Brown toured there in '68, I believe). Wish I could still find it.

6. I'm with you on the Bad Seeds
also: The Pinkhearts (or LAX), Ryan Adams' live band. They're so much better than their boss.
