1. Southwestern Michigan
cold
cheap housing
blue state

Kalamazoo is the most liberal area in this part of the state. It's a college town.

6. Yes, it can get very humid here in the summers.
It's pretty temperate, though, 95% of the time.

9. NH or Maine if you can live well outside major cities/towns
You'll be able to find affordable housing...it'll be the heating bills you'll have to ponder...

4. Boulder Colorado.
It's a blue pocket in a slightly red state. The only problem is housing costs, but perhaps you'd find something if you looked really hard.

That is REALLY a consideration. I love Boulder. Will never be able to buy but I could rent....at least I'd be with fellow dems and a great college campus. I work and play on Auraria now.

10. What do you do? Student or employed or self-employed.
Northern NH and ME are great, but the further you are south the higher the cost.In other words,do you have to be near a workplace?

Go to a red state and live where the universities are-----most liberals would be in those areas.

12. Come to San Diego. We need more dems and liberals out here.
Its scenically beautiful and the weather is the best in the whole US. You may have to do the roomate deal for a while for rents are high.
Why do you insist on cold weather?

13. I grew up in LA for 20 years
SD is great, very expensive. My idea of cheap rent is $500/monthly! I pay less than that in Denver and can get a small 1 bedroom in Boulder for $600 if I really look. Why cold weather? I have many health issues, allergies, arthritus and asthma! Humidity is asolutely out. I lived in the Atlanta and Florida for 12 years and almost died from weather. At 55 the 'roommate' thing is out.

14. Greewich Village
Where else?

Not the cheapest, but the poor always find a way here (I can vouch for that). And there's always Chinatown or Chelsea or Brooklyn or Hoboken if not exactly the Village. You'll still be in close proximity to the best, bluest, most inclusive place in the world.

26. Are You Still In Colorado? I Thought That Was Almost Blue
assuming you aren't in Jesusland Springs.

Cities in blue states are expensive. Your one consolation is
that the recesson has brought rents down a bit in some places.

Rural areas tend to be cheaper, and some are actually blue.

Blue and cold and cheap can be found in Northen New England.
Vermont and Maine are beautiful and blue.

If you like real mountains, though, you may want to stay
in the West.

There are rural areas in California that are inexpensive.
Obviously not close to the Bay Area or the LA basin or Tahoe.
The trick is to find the areas that the old hippies moved to.

28. come to illinois
where at the present time we are enjoying the rising tide of democratic corruption. several years from now we will get tired of the democrats and elect a republican thus starting the cycle all over again. illinois is interesting place to live and in most places pretty cheap to live compared to other places. jobs can be found if you have a field that is needed, some fields are in high demand. we also have the finest city in the usa-chicago and the finest democrats in government-durbin and obama.
illinois is really three states-north,mid,and south. north is industry with chicago driving the engine, mid illinois is farmland-flat as a pancake with a few bumps-southern illinois pretty much a southern state,no jobs, closed mines, lots of forests, but beautiful country

30. Illinois Options:If you need to work move to Chicago Area
But if you are retired it depends on what you want?

You want rural? with a University near by, try Carbondale.

How about Rust belt...Try Rockford, IL

You need fancy stores nearby and wanna fish all year round? Fox Lake is a great fishing and near ritzy suburbs.

Im considering the same thing.

31. Western Mass
Holyoke, Amherst, North Hampton, South Hadley... Very liberal minded area. Lots of college towns so I'm guessing housing should be cheep.
Good mixture of rural and urban. A Unitarian church in every town center. Lots of art galleries, book stores, theaters. Populated by intelligent, educated people. And yes they have sushi readily available (Thai food too, if you're into that).

It's one of my favorite places to hang out. B-)

34. Not sure...
I think the Berkshires is a little more posh. Closer to the "borscht belt" region of New York. Lots of celebrities live out there (Bill Cosby I know is one).

Another nice, though expensive area in Mass is Petersham. There's a Buddhist monastery there...I think George Harrison used to visit.

Maybe Barre Mass. is the answer...very rural, small town feel, but progressive people (for the most part), and a thriving community of artists.

In every county except Fairfield there is reasonable housing.

Plus, CT really truly has beautiful weather, year-round. Yes, it gets cold and snowy in the winter but the other 3 seasons make up for it.

40. SW New York
Southwestern New York is Chautauqua,Cattaraugus Counties. It really doesn't have any large cities. There is Jamestown with a population of about 35000 and olean which is smaller. It's basically 60 to 90 miles south of Buffalo. the nearest city is Erie Pa which is about 50 miles from Jamestown. If you're serious check out www.ccbrmls.com to see the prices of houses in the area that are for sale.
