What musician or music group should just hang it up and call it a day?
Edited on Mon Nov-22-04 10:24 AM by Mike Daniels
We're talking about groups or solo performers that used to be creative or at least ambitious (so KISS doesn't count) who have given up trying and now just go through the motions in recording and/or performing.

The primary suspect in my mind right now is Rod Stewart. Granted, he hasn't produced anything on his own of any worth for some but it was nice to see him regain some sort of sales success through his first cover album of the old standards.

However, it's apparent that he plans on milking the formula to death as he has just released his third "covers" album mining the same era of material without releasing any original material in the span between.

I know that Rod was a great interpreter back in his early days but at least he had his own material that he could stack against it on those albums plus he typically rearranged the source material for whatever covers he did perform.

Sorry Rod. It's time to quit coasting and get off your ass and create something that justifies the price someone pays to purchase your CDs and attend your concerts.

1. Elton John/Billy Joel
God love 'em both, but they need to be stopped from doing any more combined tours. The first year they did it was sorta neat. But as they get older, fatter, and less able to hit notes, it gets more and more pathetic.

4. Agree on Elton
Does he sing anything other than children's movie soundtrack songs anymore?

Billy Joel... one of my all time favorites... at least he still has good music.

25. He hasn't release an album of new songs since 1993
He did that bizarre classical album, but that's it.

26. Neither One Of Them Could Play There Way Out of Wet Paper
Both miserable, talenless hack piano players. If i played as well as those guys, i'd kill myself over the embarassment. I've wanted both of those guys to hang it up since about 1976.

2. The Rolling Stones
One of my favorite bands, but they haven't had a decent album in 20 years, unlike some of the other "oldies" that have recently hit sudden creative highs (Bob Dylan, David Bowie. etc.)

24. Yeah.
I love them too, but when I saw them in '97, they had to restart Brown Sugar 3 times before Keith got it right. Comeon guys, pack it up.

Their last good album was in the 70s.

9. Whoo. Glad somebody has my back. In that case.......
....here's a couple of Bono jokes that were in the Sun-Times this morning.

*At a party after a show, Bono talks all night about U2, his intentions, his lyrics and his interests. He finally feels a little guilty and says to the other guests, "Sorry, enough talk about me and the band. Your turn to talk about yourselves. How do you like our new song?"

*Edge and Bono crash in an airplane and go to heaven, where they see God sitting on the great white throne. God addresses Edge: "What do you believe in?" Edge replies, "I believe in the Gibson Explorer and that if we had made more U2 records, the world would have become a better place." God thinks for a second and says, "I can live with that. Come and sit at my right."
God then addresses Bono: "What do you believe in?" Says Bono: "I believe you're in my chair!"

13. They're running on ego now.
The music isn't bad, but it's not up there with The Unforgettable Fire or Achtung Baby. Why diminish your reputation with inessential work?

19. I think that's one of the lyrics on the new album........
Something about.....

You can run from love
And if it's really love it will find you
Catch the clap from Hedges
But you can't be numb for love
The only pain is to feel nothing at all
How can I hurt when I'm holding you?

After they found that formula for cheesy ballad hits, they went to shit. Funny..."Dream On" is playing on the radio right now and it was such a great tune. They were one of the best back in the day, but now... :puke:

20. What exists now is more a L-S cover band than anything else
Doesn't the current edition only have one original member? I know at least 2 or 3 of the members who survived the plane crash have died in the last 10 years or so (I think one died just this year or last from liver failure).

42. Couldn't agree more...
...I can't imagine there's a bigger Lynyrd Skynyrd fan than me. Back in the 70's, I saw them several times with their different lineups - with Ed King - only Collins and Rossington (King quit) - and with Steve Gaines. Just the memories of what I saw manages to blow me away.

But now, they need to fold up the tent and go home. They're simply whoring the name for a few extra dollars.

That's not to say they should retire. I think Gary Rossington is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. He has the most fluid playing of any guitarist I could think of.

But he needs to do something else. I'd say get a job with the Allmans, but they should hang it up too.

Put some of the Skynyrd boys in some modern country tunes and maybe country wouldn't suck as much and they'd be still contributing.

Just my 2 cents.

18. Nobody.
As long as there are people willing to pony up the dough to buy a concert ticket, CD (or downloadable tune) for a "has been" act, I say go for it. This isn't a zero-sum game; just because Rod Steward or the Rolling Stones may have (IMHO) long since outlived their effectiveness in moving me as a listener, I'm not going to begrudge them their right to continue seeking financial and, perhaps, artistic happiness playing music.

BTW--worst concert ever? Rod and the Faces' last gig, Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, c. 1975. boy did they ever suck!

Brittney

etc.

Not saying thier music isn't entertaining, but do your one or two best selling CD's and call it a day. And quit trying to pretend your artists on the same level as Floyd, the Stones, Aerosmith, Patsy Cline, David Sanborn, etc.

How I wish he would stop stringing along his pitiful fans, with every uninspired single and every bloated, inconsistent full-length. Oh yeah, and there's the small matter of his shitty collaborators.

I think a little of the magic is lost with every record he releases.

They are going on the 9th year of their "farewell" tour, and have replaced two original members with look-alikes in the same makeup. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley have proven again and again that they couldn't give a shit about their fans, all they care about is their bank accounts. Kiss is a joke that's getting way too old.
