anybody know the best way to get from philly to nyc ?
Edited on Mon Jul-14-03 09:44 AM by newsguyatl
excluding by car or air :-)

i'm gonna be in philly this week, but have an interview in nyc later in the week... we COULD drive into nyc, but for a native southerner, i'm not really wanting to do that... i've looked at amtrak and their rates are outrageous... any natives here know of a cheaper, easier way to get there by train?

if not by train, what's the farthest out i could drive in and park and ride the train in, coming from philly?

advice is MUCH appreciated

1. You Could Drive to New Brunswick or Edison
And take the Amtrak train from there. Edison is right on Rt. 1, so it may be more convenient.

2. re
so.. the best way to nyc excluding air, car, and rail??? I'd say either take Greyhound or drive to Newark and take the commuter train in... or just suck it up and take Amtrak in to Penn Station. good luck.

You may be able to go cheaper than Amtrak using NJ Commuter Rail.
I know I travelled on the commuter rail from MetroPark (Metuchen,
NJ) south to Philadelphia for quite a bit less than the Amtrak
fare, but I don't recall whether there's commuter rail northbound
from MetroPark to Penn Station, NYC. The web ought to yield up an
answer in about 30 seconds of your time.

Commuter rail definitely runs out from NYC to the Newark, NJ area
(including "the Oranges").

PATH runs out to Hoboken and Jersey City, NJ with parking at both
places.

And then there's Greyhound.

or the Mama Cass Elliot solution...

"...Standin' on the Turnpike,
Thumb out to hitch-hike,
Take her to New York right away"

5. Wha?
The train from Reading Terminal to Penn Station is totally reasonable. It's also the fastest and easiest way to get there, especially for tourists. Don't know where you got your fare quotes!

8. $90 seems a bit steep
That may have been an ACELLA or NE Direct. But AMTRAK is usually around $50.

10. $50 sounds about right, round trip, but there are often specials too...
And you might be able to get a family rate.

11. Actually, I was talking 1 way
AMTRAK is painfully overpriced. It's literally cheaper for me to fly to Boston than take AMTRAK.

7. The cheapest option is commuter rail
You can take SEPTA from Philly to Trenton, and then NJ Transit from Trenton to Penn Station (NYC). That'll cost roughly $10 each way. In terms of driving, you could drive to Newark or Hoboken and take the PATH into Manhattan for $1.50. No easy way to get into the subway coming from Philly, since it doesn't cross into NJ. Y

12. Amtrak is $82 student, round trip - PHL to NYP to PHL
slightly higher (10 to 15 dollars round trip) for adult

The communter rail into Jersey from NYC on the Erie Lackawanna going west toward Peopack would be cheaper - but slower - and may require a train change onto the PATH train for the trip into Manhatten - but it will be cheaper.

13. Answer: Philadelphia to New York via Trenton
Edited on Mon Jul-14-03 10:28 AM by tsipple
If you confine yourself to SEPTA and New Jersey Transit trains, and stay off the Amtrak trains, you can get from Philadelphia to New York City for the commuter fare. The one-way SEPTA Philadelphia-Trenton fare is $7, and the one-way Trenton-NYC fare is $10.50, for a grand total of $17.50 one-way. That beats Greyhound by $3.50.

Buy your tickets at the station, not on board the trains, otherwise there's a penalty. You can look up train times at the above web sites to build your connection. Your ticket will not be valid on Amtrak trains, however, and you must change trains in Trenton.

Other option is to drive to Trenton -- not far -- then ride the train into New York.

Click here for SEPTA's full weekday timetable (Philadelphia connecting in Trenton to New York and return). Confirm NJ Transit train times, though, on the other web site.
