Poll question: What do I do about "band camp"?
My daughter's bugging me for money for band camp. I've got the money - that's not the issue.

The issue is that I fall down laughing anytime, anywhere anybody says the words "band camp" because of the movie American Pie.

She's aware that it's an issue, without specifics. She's under 16. I suspect half her class has seen the movie and she's mature for her age (given her circumstances, she had to grow up fast).

Do I...

1. Send her to band camp..
Send her to band camp...

If you are afraid that she is going to get schooled in sexual activities ala American Pie, you better set her down and talk to ther about the facts of life if you haven't already. I figure from your wrtings that she is close to 16 and she needs to know about these things. Alas, the US is one of the few countries that have age of conscent at 18. Where I was born it was 16, now 15 hence this is not a problem for most parents nor kids.

And stopping her from going to band camp is not going to stop her from becoming sexually active if that is what she wants anyway. She can do that anywhere, anytime even just a few feet away from you, her parents without you even knowing it.

2. Maybe I didn't explain it clearly
I've got the money. She can go to the camp. She went last year.

She just needs to stop saying "band camp" around me.

4. we call it music camp
The one my daughter goes to every year is band/vocal/theatre/strings........

It's funny how pissed off the kids get every times someone says that awful phrase beginning "This one time....". they really resent it. :)

5. I laugh every time I hear the words "band camp" and "flute" used
in the same sentence.

I don't know how you could keep a straight face....

:D

Just make sure the camp director's name is NOT "Stiffler".

6. You Don't Need to Let Her See the Movie
Just tell her it was an inside joke from a comedy movie a few years back because one of the characters went to band camp.

Doesn't have to be any more specific than that. She may not care any more than about some old Monty Python quote.

8. You must pull a daring stunt, to stop her talk of band camp
Next time she says something about band camp you have to tell her: "oh, stick a flute(as opposed to the usual sock) in it! I'm tired of hearing about band camp" This will either elicit great laughter and or embarrassment on her part, which would indicate that she knows the joke. Or she will be upset that you told her to shut up, which means that she doesn't know the joke. From there you can act accordingly.
