Church school handout says members who are in Iraqi fighting see a
need for coats for the children there and asks for donations. My totally unChristian and uncharacteristic reaction was "why don't you ask *bush and all those freaky war lovers who voted for him for help, but leave me out of this". I know the Iraqi children in need had no say in what happened to them and their country but still the whole thing just set me on fire. They would not be needing help at all if we had not invaded THEM!

1. It also bothers me
that there are soooo many children here who are living in poverty and could use coats, etc..

4. I think it is okay to have children send
things to the children in Iraq. After Thanksgiving break, I am going to have my high school students bring in school supplies to send to the children in Iraq (I found the organization that gathers up the school supplies on a link from Michael Moore's site). I teach religion in a red state (even though I am from a blue state), and about 80% of my students have unquestioning support for *. This is probably either from peer pressure or because their parents support *. My students know I am a Kerry supporter (because they asked), and they taunted me in class on November 3. But I have a job to do, so I am persevering (this is my first experience teaching high school - I also teach at a college).

I think that having the students bring in items, pack them up, etc. will give them some concrete connection to the suffering of the other side in this war. I am hoping that at least some of them experience a connection - giving something good from their hands to the hands of a child in Iraq. Right now, I think they aren't seeing the big picture. We will also be discussing just war theory in class, and the statements made AGAINST the invasion of Iraq by US Bishops, etc. I think most of them probably have no idea that the "RC Church" (bishops and pope) is against preemptive war and the killing of civilians, and made several statements against the war in early 2003.

need them and will need them even more with bush and his evil, heartless buddies in power. Helping those that have been purposefully harmed by us is so hypocritical. Let the bombers and the killers help them. By that I mean the GOP elite and their cronies who have done the damage to those children and their families.!!!

5. Um,
why doesn't Halliburton buy them some coats. Heck, they've got TONS of money in profit to buy coats for kids all over the world.

6. The whole thing just makes me freaking, fracking ANGRY. I don't
want children to ever suffer but why are we having to repair the damage we did?? (Not of our own volition for those of us here.)
