Poll question: A L E X A N D E R : Too Controversial or Not Controversial Enough?
I don't think it's controversial enough. It's weird that Oliver Stone, who has never shied away from offending anyone before, has suddenly become to sensitive and cautious, not wanting to offend anyone with mention of Alexander being a rampant homosexual. (He pretty much married women just for the sake of formality and having an heir.)

1. The ancients version of Roy Cohn
Gay and a horrible person at the same time.

Alexander basically killed a million people and took everything they owned. Why are we supposed to admire this?

Alexander was a complete failure on the human evolutionary scale. Karmically, he was likely reborn as a slug. With luck, by now his soul has progressed to that of a dog.

Alexander the Great Fuckup.

3. How would anyone "know" either way?
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 01:21 AM by saracat
Were any persons currently living in bed with Alexander? There is just as much evidence that he was bi-sexual as anything else. He certainly married and married and married as well as had mistresses for someone who was'nt interested in women. And finally, who cares? Maybe Oliver Stone doesn't want to make a point where none exists, according to his interpetation of the facts.

8. exactly
I think some people want him to either be gay or straight and then just proclaim it to be "the truth".

The only truth is that it's completely debatable.

It's also relevant to point out the pattern in human history of people put into all male or same-sex culture for most of their time for homosexuality to become sexuality. And combine that with the Ancient Greek attitudes about sex and you've got yourself an ambiguously gay conqueror.

4. Not enough buggery, dammit.
Goddammit I wanted to see Colin Farrell and Jared Leto make out. Is that so much to ask?!

You'd think we'd have evolved from from Interview With a Vampire came out and every gay/bi male and slash fan had to pour ice down our shorts after that unbearably cruel tease with Brad Pitt and Antonio Banderas.

Whether you think Alex was gay or bi (and I'm firmly in the bi camp, though I admit it's pointless to put modern day sexual constructs on ancient figures), the fact is homeboy boofed men and liked it, it was part of his life, and it should be acknowledged at the very least. Showing it in gory detail would be nice too.

6. Afraid of reality
Hollywood, and to a greater extent the rest of society, is not willing to accept reality. The ancient cultures or Rome, Greece, Macedonia etc were much more accepting of, what we would call today, homosexuality or bisexuality. I often wonder how the world would have evolved without the major religions. Peace, tolerance of our fellow humankind, understanding of science and the natural world. Perhaps not so Utopian, but I bet a lot less bloody and free of republicans.

7. Did you see the movie?
I don't think it's at all set in stone that he was a "rampant homosexual". I think there's plenty to lead one to the belief that he was bisexual.

I haven't seen the movie yet so I don't know how he's portrayed. I thought that Stone did have him obvious to be not straight though.
