11. That is Mary the Elephant. She was hanged in TN in 1916

for killing someone who fed her a lit cigarette. The townspeople decided that the only way to deal with her was by hanging her from a railroad derrick car. And so they did.

Another unfortunate elephant, Topsy, was electrocuted at Coney Island in 1903. Thomas Edison made a film of it, with the brilliant title "Electrocuting an Elephant."
