Cheating women can blame their genes
London Evening Standard
24 November 2004

Women who cheat on their partners could blame a large part of their infidelity on their genes, according to new research published today.

Professor Tim Spector, director of the Twin Research Unit at St Thomas' Hospital, central London, that carried out the study said there may be an important reason for women to stray from their partners and added no one gene was responsible for the behaviour but a "suite" of genes.

Doctors working at the unit undertook the study to look at the genes underlying infidelity and a number of sexual partners women have.

The search found that genetic factors accounted for 40% of the reasons for an affair with other issues like a shared family environment, and more importantly individual life events accounting for the remaining 60%.

3. Amen!
Now as a woman I can be a cheater and blame it on my genes? Now we are victims of our gene pool! Why not blame EVERYTHING bad on genes - everything good on character and perseverance? Sad and pathetic because it's easier to be a victim - it doesn't require you to do anything.

4. Yeah, just sit back and cheat...much easier than maintaining
fidelity. Relationships are hard--getting one's sexual needs met with someone else is easy. I guess I'm weird, but I prefer putting the work in and being able to look at myself in the mirror.

2. Honey, I'm sorry, I couldn't help it...
I'm genetically inclined to screw everything that walks.

I'm all for genetic research, but this is nutso!

Does this "gene suite" also exist in men? If not, does this not imply that women are unable to control themselves?

5. Not surprising.

Many animals exhibit cheating characteristics due to genetics. Especially prevalent in birds where females of some species will risk death (the usual consequence of getting caught) to get a chance at "better" genes of the more dominant males.
Note, it isn't the primary factor (under 50%) and men weren't studied but almost surely have a similar "suite" of genes.

7. I had a girlfriend
with this genetic condition. Of course, she also had a master's degree and got fired from every job she ever had while I knew her. Maybe it was an "irresponsible" gene.

8. I knew it - some women are genetically evil
This does seem to be a bit much. How much can one blame of genetics. If you can't resist the urge to crush another person's feelings by being unfaithful, just break up with them. Please let us not blame something else on nature v. nurture.

Kidding about the whole "women = evil" thing.
