Law allows cats to attack dogs
November 25, 2004

BY the law of the genteel jungle of Sydney's inner west, it is cats that come out on top.

While Bob the Dog faces criminal charges for chasing a cat, a feline that attacked a smaller puppy got off scot-free.

As bitser Bob faced Balmain Local Court again yesterday, The Daily Telegraph can reveal no action was taken to punish the puss that clawed Claudia, a miniature pinscher.

Claudia's owner, Craig Kelly, wrote to Leichhardt Municipal Council recently to inform them his dog had been injured by a cat in "an unprovoked attack" on a public footpath in Turner St, Balmain.

2. A full sized cat could still seriously injure a small dog.
When I walk my mini schnauzer, I obviously have to watch for our neighbors' boxers and laboradors. But I also have to check for their black cat, which spends about half of its life on our property.

3. Also injure an 85 pound dog - one on one cats usually win and win big!
2 dogs will work together to "clear" an area of cats - and will be able to do so fairly easily.

But I have had many dogs attacked by cats, costing upwards of $1000 per dog to have skin repaired. The standard attack seems to be to jump on with 3 claws in to hold on while free claw tears skin off dog.

My Goldens would chase cats, catch/corner cats, and then let them go without a bite. My German Shepherd had a grudge and killed the only one he caught in his 12 years.

4. Cats don't attack dogs
What a laughable notion. It conjures an image of a crafty feline stalking some unsuspecting mutt. What happens is that big, dumb doggie blunders into the cat's personal space and receives a very sharp lesson in manners. A smart dog will carry away valuable life experience from this encounter.

5. OK - when a cat claims an area that already has a dog, it is a personal
space problem - not an attack.

Indeed a cat coming from many homes away has a personal space need that may includes various blocks?

Is the image of climbing a tree within the chain length of a chained dog, and then dropping on the dog, an image of a crafty feline - or just a bored pet?

:toast:

I see we have proven that the Democratic Party is a "big tent"!! :-)

Actually I like some cats, and some dogs - but I am a dog person!

Have a great day!

:-)

6. The Maine coon cat next door to me when I was a kid
Used to lurk in the bushes, just waiting for a dog to saunter by. After a while, dogs just avoided our two yards altogether.

8. The doberman who used to live behind us
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 06:36 PM by China_cat
attacked our cat, Blue. Took off half his tail.

Blue reciprocated and took off 90% of the Doberman's face. They had to put him down because of it. Blue waited to do so until his tail was healed.

Oh, and this is Blue as a kitten.
