This year I just might get a HOT meal on Thanksgiving
Still no word on me sitting at the "Big table" but:

I can't say enough great things about my Mother but just ONCE I would like the food to still be hot by the time we start eating.

I didn't say anything about this for a while when my wife and I started dating and then on one drive home I mentioned it and she cracked up-she was wondering why the food is always cold by the time everything gets on the table. The weird part is that my mother reheats and reheats everything and it all comes right out of the oven or microwave right to the table ......you take your first bite and you sit back to realize that once again somehow EVERYTHING has gotten cold again.

My wife and I bought her a hot plate two years ago. She used it once and everything was just right but we haven't seen it since. They don't seem to notice. Not one Christmas, Thanksgiving, or even having steaks on a visit has worked out right-I finally got up and stuck a plate of food into the microwave and heated it up (the message apparently didn't get through).

We are devising ways to plant the hot plate idea into her head tomorrow morning. They watch Fox News so it can't be too hard.

I know I shouldn't complain about having food when so many don't but just ONCE I would like to have a hot meal.

2. Wow...that's weird.

Does your mom have a problem with food that's still hot? Maybe it's harder for her to digest, or it makes her teeth hurt, or something?

I mean, was it like that when you were a kid?

3. No I grew up on casseroles mostly
My mom was a "single mom" until she remarried when I was 12 so we always had casseroles in the fridge to heat up.

This seems to be something new. No she doesn't have a problem with hot food she just can't seem to get it all together (and she is known for her organization). Yes it is weird.

4. At my house the cold food was my Dad's fault
H had this weird habit of doing some other task like rearrange the furniture in the living room when called into the dining room to carve the turkey. He would do anything to avoid it, then he took forever carving it while everyone sat there starving. And we weren't allowed to eat until everyone was served.

I think it is a passive-aggessive thing.

5. memories ...
Geez, you guys are making me cry. My father passed away 7 years ago yesterday and he did all of the cooking when I was growing up. He learned this well in the Marine Corps. as he was the head chef during WWII in the pacific.

He always served up a great dinner that was always very hot and good. He'd yell at us, "Time for dinner! Get in here troops!"

God how I miss them all - they are all gone now. Just myself and my husband now.

This time of year is hell for those of us with next to no one left.

Be glad your mom is still around to serve a dinner of any sort. No plans here much. I got a turkey and also a touch of the stomach flu so I have no appetite today. :(

11. yeah he was a great man
I loved him so very much. When he died I thought I'd never get over it and obviously I haven't.

I remember when I was a little kid I asked him "How many people did you kill in the war Daddy?" He would never reply. I figured it out many years later that the number of people he killed was zero being he was a cook.

I sure wish he was still here - he'd be almost 83 if he was. I have his spoon from his Marine Corps. days that I use to cook with almost everyday.

I'll be glad when the holidays are gone myself.

Thanks for saying that about my Dad - he was a good man in my book.

The few, the proud, and yes he was a Marine that never killed.

8. LOL
I just got an image of me sitting there with a napkin tucked into my shirt and a pair of pliers in my left hand and a blowtorch on the table....and the look from my stepfather. THAT just might do it.

9. Take a hot plate or find the one you gave her.
Then tell her you and your wife want to help - especially that last minute frenzy when it's all ready and needs to be EATEN!! Then take over at the critical stage with your wife, using the hot plate to keep the stuf warm while you get other things ready for the table.
Insist that she derserves some pampering and help - - and do it.
I cook dinner every year and Ican't figure out how she does this. Weird.
Good luck and if you want a hot plate of turkey, swing through Bon Air - I'll have lots of everything. In fact,, I'm giving myself 10 minutes before I go start on the pie crusts..
:hi:

10. Heat the plates?
I don't get the hot plate thing. Put all the food on hot plates? Thanksgiving never comes off all at the same time for me either, so I'm open for hot food ideas. My family actually likes food warmish, I like it piping hot. Maybe that's why they've never noticed or complained or maybe they just know better. ha.

12. No a hot plate-an electrical device you put whole dishes on
Like once the mashed potatoes are gone you put it on the hot plate and it keeps it warm.

13. So lots of hot plates
I know what a hot plate is, I just wasn't sure if that's what you meant. How many would you need to put the whole Thanksgiving dinner on? Maybe that's why she doesn't use them. Just a thought.

I think I'm going to heat up plates a little bit this year. That way the first food you put on your plate will still be warm by the time you get the last food.

14. One really
We got her a big and good one at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Aside from the Turkey most everything (mashed taters are made last) can fit on it.
