17. Still have all the albums
I painstakingly collected before the CD era, including all the imports and B-sides...along with INXS, OMD, The Smiths, Siouxsie, and, yes absolutely, Thomas Dolby and Madness.

22. You've Been Served!
Actually, i still like them too! I always thought that they "made" it for two reasons:

1) Obviously some REALLY good looking guys and good early videos.
2) They remembered what many early 80's New Romantic bands did not. Rock music is about GUITARS. They had layers of keyboards, yes, but it was always the icing, not the cake. The cake was drums, bass, and hard edged guitars.

Their contemporaries like Cabaret Voltaire, Soft Cell, The The, etc. didn't learn that lesson. That's why folks like you and i are still talking about Duran Duran.

27. Umm. The The is still around.
...and they have harder guitars than DD did. Mind Bomb is one of the best 80s albums made.

Hey! Anybody get DD's newest? Astronaut? It's pretty good. All the original Taylors are back. First time since Arena.

29. Not On The Early Stuff
They were more strongly synth. Look i liked those guys a lot, but my speculation is to why DD broke so much larger than everyone else. The edgier sound due to Andy's guitars gave the sound a broader audience.

The The's early stuff was heavily layered synth like most of the other new romantic stuff. Cabaret Voltaire had guitars too, but they were down in the mix. Duran Duran's guitars were up front.

That's my theory and i'm stickin' to it.

30. How early? Soul Mining early?
or before that? I got into them with Infected, and got Soul Mining later, so I must have come into them late. The The is harldy what I'd call "new romantic", in the Aztec Camera, Fun Boy 3, Spandau Ballet vein of New Wave. I always considered them modern rock, more akin to Oingo Boingo and The Smiths.

23. I only STARTED liking them a few years ago
In the eighties I was still in junior high/high school, and there was no way I was going to listen to a band for chicks. No way, no how.

And then I grew up and realized just how good they were and are. "Thank You" is one of my all time favorite albums. I hear they've got a new one coming out with the original lineup, too.

(of course, that album was stolen, but I'm not bitter or anything ;) )
