Best Music Download Service?
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 04:42 PM by Jack_Dawson
I don't have a Mac nor an iPOD so don't go there. I'm talking about good old-fashioned music downloading that I can eventually put on a CD and play in my car, in this post-Napster era. I heard there are some services where you can get decent, good-quality songs for $.50 or $1.00/song. But then again, I've heard with some there are limitations about transferring the files to CD, etc.

What has been your experience?

Thx in advance...

JD

2. I like the RealPlayer store
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 04:45 PM by Nickster
They have the Rolling Stone top ten for .49 each and the albums are a set price rather than just .99 for each track x how every many tracks. For example, you can get a 12 track album for 9.99. Lots of stuff like that. Other stores I've checked will charge a dollar for every track, even if it's just a 10 second intro. I hated that.

Oh yeah almost forgot, the digital rights management is pretty easy to deal with. I think the limit is like 7 times burning the same playlist, but if you switch the playlist around, you can burn it more if you need to.

www.allofmp3.com

You need a PayPal account, which you then use to pay Xrost, which you then use to fund your AllofMP3 account, but it is worth it.

I've already spent about $30 bucks there. It is legitimate, and totally legal.

On edit: Use their Explorer ... it makes the whole process easier.

31. You don't give them your credit card info ...
You use PayPal, which then credits your Xrost account, which you in turn use to pay AllofMP3 ... no Russians get your credit card info.

27. It might be legal for them to run it in Russia..
But I doubt it is legal for you to use it. Assuming you are in the USA.

I would imagine the RIAA would love to get thier hands on that sites server logs to start issuing lawsuits.

I just don't want you to think you can't get in trouble for using that site. The fact is using that site within the US borders is most likely illegal. My sister-in-law payed for some site that took $25 to give her a link to LimeWire. Since she payed she thought she could use it to download all the music she wanted legally. She was wrong.

I use BitTorrent for my music and movies. But, I know I am breaking the law.

34. The problem with AllofMP3?
They screw the artist. They pay only for the bandwidth, they don't pay a cent to the artists. So bear that in mind. You may as well just download for free from soulseek, cause at least you're not making some russian dudes money. It's also probably not legal, especially if you live in the USA. So again, why pay to break the law, when you can do that for free with soulseek.

On the other hand: iTunes works with Windows; the DRM (Digital Rights Management) isn't too ridiculous; if you have kids, you can set up accounts so they can buy music without having to use a credit card, it has plenty of selection, and their library continues to grow.

25. eMusic.com
If you like obscure or non-mainstream stuff. 9.95 a month for 40 songs. They have all kinds of good stuff. Recent releases include Neko Case, Tom Waits, plus older stuff fom the Replacements, CCR, the Kinks, Lewis Black, etc, etc.

And they're are no burning restrictions. Once you download the song you can burn or transfer it as many times as you like.

Since I mostly listen to punk / emo stuff. I stopped my subscription once they switched from the all you can download for 14.99 per month format. Those were the good old days.

35. I reccomend just going with Soulseek...
... downloads are free and unlimited, and you can burn everything to CD.

If you want to support the artist, send them a 5 spot directly, it's more than they will ever get through the record company for the sale of the same CD.

I mean, to each his own, I am really anti-RIAA lately, so... it is what it is..

37. RIAA is definitely out of control...
...but I also have to say that I have a real problem with the illegal download of music. For every success story you hear about some band finding an audience via downloads on the net, you could find about 1000 artists who are severely impacted. Not just the "fuck them, they have more money than God, who the hell cares if I steal a miserable song from them" - type artists, but also "living out of the van between gigs because they got this once chance to release a record and they're starting to get some airplay and who knows, maybe they could actually fulfill their dreams and make a career out of this" type artist.

38. I agree...
... that's why if I am listening to a young struggling band I will go buy the store bought CD, even if I already have the music...

.. I am not going to go and drop 16 bucks on the new Xzibit CD, though....which amounts to what? One extra gulp of Remme Martin on any given Saturday night? ...

and no I don't feel the slightest bit guilty that I have a 3 week early advanced studio copy.

Edited on Thu Nov-25-04 01:00 PM by xpunkisneatx
put ?intitle:index.of? mp3 and then whatever band or song you want in the search. You have to search around a bit but you can ususally find some good ones...FREE.

And I don't give a shit that it is stealing. Most musicians get their money from merch and touring...its the CD companies who lose out...and thats their own fault for pricing CDs at $18 when it takes only like $1 to print them.

On edit:
Here is a link...a shitload of mp3s here...
