House plumbing

My insurance company is worried about the state of the plumbing in my new (old) house. What gives? What's wrong with cast iron?

and the cost of repairs. At least you won't be as anemic. They should be more worried about the cancer risk in PVC but this is immediate dollars and sense we're talking about, not long term.

3. in my opinion.....(as an old plumber)

cast iron is good stuff, as long as the joints are OK, you should be good to go. any competent plumber would know how to repack (with oakum) and pour new lead into the joints, if they are leaking. if it is rusting out, adapting to plastic, using the black ABS pipe is the way to go, and a lot of renovators go ahead and run new plastic from the stack as it emerges from the basement floor, all the way to the roof. get another opinion. ps, oakum is made from hemp...good stuff.

4. plumber here

Cast iron is still code in commercial buildings in many states. It's good stuff and easily repaired. No cancer risk worry as cast is only used for drain pipes.

5. My granpa was a plumber all his of life

and sometimes on Saturdays i'd go out on a call with him and thats when i found out what Oakum was.....yuck! Yes i know it has a purpose but the first i ever saw a piece of it was when i was 6.
