In the world of the Wing-Nuts, T'giving is a Religious Holiday
I can't believe what I heard today. Milwaukee's major AM station, which is also unfortunately the home of obnoxious talk show hosts during the day, played a Thanksgiving message. It pretty much implied that Americans are unique because we thank God for our bounty, the old "chosen people among nations" thing. And just so you know WHICH God, it closed with organ music playing a church hymnal. So Americans of other faiths... or no faith... just go to the back of the bus. Be thankful you're allowed in this country, and just watch the True Believers take their rightful place as the only authentic celebrants of Thanksgiving.

Pardon me while I retch.

1. If its so fuckin' religious
then I should be able to get off work tomorrow. But I can't, even on religious grounds. So I guess were just a bunch of heathens. Thankfully.

2. Had a discussion at work today on this very subject

Some were arguing it was a religious holiday. I alone pointed out that it was started in 1863 by Lincoln, as a way to unite the country torn by civil war. Although it certainly has religious connotations, the holiday itself is a purely national one. And we are hardly the only country to have such a national holiday.

I then, speaking as a Christian myself, reminded them that the act of thanksgiving does not need any special day; we are supposed to give thanks to God at all times and in all circumstances.

Doubt I liberated any right-wingers in the bunch, but the discussion ended at that point!

3. Gluttony is mentioned in the Bible.
Thanksgiving must be a religious holiday in celebration of gluttony.

If they had read their Bible, they'd know that God tends to chose another nation when said "chosen nation" gets arrogant.
