My dog is acting weird . . . concerned
Edited on Thu Nov-25-04 12:14 AM by SeanOhio
My 11 year old miniature dachshund is acting really weird suddenly. After his bath, he began to snort/make funny breathing noises. Now he's licking the floor and chewing on everything in sight. When I hold him, he's tense. It's the strangest thing I've ever seen in him.

There were no chemicals in the bathtub, either. Has anyone else seen this before? I'm just trying to reassure myself as I watch him and contemplate my vet options.

4. Phew
Apparently he ate or drank something rotten. He just puked all over the floor. Now he's acting normal again. Phew.

10. I was going to say
tummy trouble. Bit of grated carrot or you can buy wheat seeds and plant them in a pot and keep it in a window for grass nibbling when those doggy moments of indigestion happen.

12. Thank goodness!
At this time of night your only option would be an emergency vet. I had to drive my last dog to one when she suffered her first seizure at 2 a.m. Scary. Hope your little Dachsy friend stays well for some time to come. :)

13. That chewing on everything in sight made me think
He ingested some soap somehow. I am glad he is better and you saved yourself a $300 ER vet visit :)

Expect some ummmmm "runny poop" tomorrow....

14. definitely call the vet in the a.m. and ask them about it.
keep a VERY close eye on him tonight.

also check the shampoo and make sure it isn't out of date or old, if it's old throw it out and get some new.

It's so weird what you describe, it just sound like there was something actually in his mouth or throat that he was trying to move or dislodge, or perhaps he got some shampoo in his mouth. Maybe when he threw it up he got whatever it was out of there. It really sounds like an obstruction.

If he shows any more signs call an emergency clinic, you can get the number usually by calling your normal vet or any vet in the phone book and most will leave a number on the line for who to contact for emergencies after hours.

7. Hotdogs are pretty delicate
They don't take too well to temperature changes, diet changes, etc...they are also (I think) susceptible to lung probs and hypertension, though I don't really know for sure...my guess is that you have to keep your house temp at a certain degree, (like my iguana that I like killed...) and I may be wrong, but if you leave a dog alone for more than 3.2 minutes they think that you have abandoned them forever...that's why I only have cats, and even they give me a hard time!!

XXXOOO
but he may be asmatic (sp?) dachshunds I think tend to be like that...

8. You have no veterinary options.
Get your dog to the vet. It could be an allergy to the soap or maybe even the soap used to clean the towel you used to dry off the dog. There could also be something stuck in his nasal passages or throat. If it is playing havoc with his breathing, get to a vet fast.

I may be going overboard on this but not being able to see the dog, I can only guess. But a vet can tell you for sure.

I have had dozens of dogs. I have three now plus a cat and when something is wrong that I cannot diagnose on my own, we go to the vet and if it becomes really serious, we go to a veterinary emergency hospital.

16. He's doing well
Thanks for the replies. I think he may have had shampoo or something in his throat, and he was trying to get the residue off, somehow. He threw up and stopped his erratic behaviour. Now he's running around the house playing like he always has.

17. You still might want to check in with your vet later on.
My dad has a small mixed terrier that is prone to seizures and some of your dog's behavior(s) are exactly like hers. The seizures began gradually, such as the licking/chewing/snorting but have progressed into full blown episodes now.

Not trying to alarm you because my Vet said seizures are a common occurrence in small dogs.

19. If you have an emergency clinic in your area,
you might want to give them a call and run this by them. That's what I do, if my vet's not available and I get scared about something. I have two little dogs. Also, DU now has a Pet forum. You might want to join there, since everybody there has interest in or knowledge about, pets.:-)

20. Glad I read ahead !
And he's okay. Great advice to ask in the pets forum, great people over there!

I'm "owned" by a mindoxie too! And they tend to sort their bath water, so I keep all water and spray away from her head, as just use a soapless wet washcloth to wipe her face.
