The hamster got out!

My son left the doors open on her cage. We've got 4 cats here who were pretty good with the bunny we had a number of years ago; but their contact with her was always supervised.

The house is so cluttered, she could be anywhere.

Any suggestions?

and put out some hamster nibblies.

The cat ended up just batting the poor creature and carrying it around like it was his baby. He is a very odd cat.

one night, my hamster got out and i didn't know it. i woke up at about 7am because the cat jumped on my chest. i open my eyes and he's sitting there purring, carrying the hamster by its neck, like it was its kitten. he was saying, "hamster got out, here ya go!"

(He's now 48). The cat took the poor thing out of his hands and mangled it. Very traumatic for my bro (the hamster as well). I bought him a replacement, but now that I think of it, don't have any recollection of whether the second hamster made it....The cat, well he was superhuman and was at least 18 when he met his maker.

They'll find the hamster...just have a squirt bottle handy...shoot them before they pounce. I have three cats and a parakeet with clipped wings. Sometimes she gets out when there's a cat loose. Water bottle is always handy.

at least you know it's no longer feeling/in any pain.

Aside from that, I wish I had more to add to the convo.

Phew! The cats didn't even care. I heard her rustling around in back of the piano. I grabbed her before she could get under the radiator!

We've only had her for a couple of weeks. It really never occurred to me to tell my little guy that he'd have to keep the cage doors closed. I just assumed he'd know.

If they left your hamster alone, they probly aren't doing much to the mice, either.

my cats give me hints when I dont fill up their autofeeder or if they don't get wet food...they lay mice out in my hallway...if you feed them a lot of "spoiled kitty" kind of stuff on a constant basis, you may be ok...

You might try putting the cage on the floor with fresh food inside, then you might have to watch it for a little while. Our hamster got out recently, also, but I thought it was a rat and tried to shoo it toward the cat, who probably let it out to begin with. I heard chewing, and saw the cat staring behind the desk, I looked and saw a rat face, or so I thought. Went to shoo it with a broom handle, and caught sight of the open cage....oops!

I banished all the pets, and closed the doors. Put the cage on the floor with food in it, and waited for about an hour it seems. Of course, I did know where she was, so it was easy enough, just had to wait till she went for the food. Good luck, and I think the cats will probably point you to where the hamster is at, as another poster said.
